Vanadzor, Armenia
I am a huge supporter of Society for Orphaned Armenian Relief (SOAR) for many reasons, one of the biggest is that they are able to assist at-risk young women in ways that radically improve their lives. This week they focus on Ani and Inna Aghabekyan:
In 2004, Ani and her younger sister Inna were taken to Vanadzor Orphanage because there was no father, and their mother was drinking heavily. Initially, the mother visited the girls, but soon disappeared. The girls have very little memory of their parents. Ani left the orphanage in 2016 when she became 18, and her sister was taken to a foster family in Yerevan. Ani lived on her own in a rented apartment, but Inna was returned to Vanadzor when it was discovered that she was being abused by the foster family.
Vanadzor Orphanage has since closed, and Inna moved in with her sister. The girls have "left without parental care" status, and are eligible for a free apartment from the state, but there is no way to know if and when that will happen.
An annual commitment of $1,200 is requested. Sponsorship funds will be used for their rent and other living expenses.
