Seven generations of the Tumanyan family have lived in Tatoents' house. It was built in 1837 by Tadevos Tumanyan (Tato) and is remembered by the current generation variously as the house of NikoghosTumanyan and doctor Khachik's house.Several hundred people in this family that we can trace from almost two hundred years, have been influential in the politics and society of Armenia and region of Ashtarak.
Zanazan, who lost her husband during the Stalin repressions period,was from a family well known for its intelligence. She made sure that all her children got a good education. Two of the children Tatik andNazik, were geologists who worked in Yerevan. Ashot became and architect who built several roadways. Maro was a chemist. The other son, Khachik became a doctor, returned to Ashtarak after getting his education , to keep the house for the next generations.
During the 180 years of Tatoents' house, many people and activities, including helping people in need, took place here. It has been the setting for interesting discussions and entertainment,especially in the arts. Three sons of Nikoghos were playing traditional Armenian instrument- tar. and one Ashot was also a painter. No matter what was the reason, Tatoents' house has always been a place where the sound of the national zurna and dhol was heard.
Till some years ago, the oldest member of the family Tagush, the doctor's wife, has maintained the traditions and customs of the house in a wonderful way. Now their daughter Chareta (Hripsime) and her family continue keeping the fire of the house and give the best Ashtarakian food and home-made wine and vodka to the guests. And she is always there to take care of whoever comes knocking the door. With God's help,happiness of Tatoents' house will go on and on... and those who come next continue these wonderful traditions through decades and centuries to come...
