VAMPIRE BAT FACT TIME!!

There are only three extant species of vampire bats (those that feed only on blood), and they all live in central and south america! they are part of the leaf-nosed bat subfamily, so they all have funny-looking smushed faces! There are also false vampire bats, which are carnivorous but not blood-drinking. The false vampire bat (aka spectral bat) weighs 5 times more than any vampire bat!

the common vampire bat's scientific name is Desmodus rotundus. ROTUNDUS!!!

Vampire bats are the ONLY mammals that eat exclusively blood! It's a parasitism strategy called micropredation.

vampire bats are much better at maneuvering on the ground than other bats! they have a hopping run like a kangaroo, except they use their wings to propel themselves!

Vampire bat saliva has anticoagulant (anti-clotting) properties to keep the blood flowing! Mosquitos have this too!

Bats (not just vampires) are what's called a reservoir species! Meaning they can carry and spread all sorts of diseases without showing symptoms. Rabies, however, is just as deadly to a bat, even though they're asymptomatic for longer than other mammals. Reservoir species are how diseases stay prevalent in areas that would otherwise have it under control. So I won't actually be able to pet a bat after my vaccines. :(

Vampire bats' teeth lack enamel, so they're razor-sharp! Even handling the skull can cut you.

and, most importantly: vampire bats are perfectly pocket-sized, at 9cm/3.5in length and 20-40g/2oz 😊

Unfortunately I couldn't recreate the shirtless part of the drawing, simply because I can't do open-chest binding for shit.

I enjoy supporting other artists by doing this, okay? It also gives me pose ideas.

Okay, so literally anybody who has worked in the medical field can tell you that getting blood on you (from someone else) is like playing Russian Roulette: Disease Edition.  You can’t convince me otherwise that a few doctors out there have a straight up fear of blood touching their skin because of this.

What if Stephen was like this, even as a vampire?

Do you realize how traumatic that would be?

All his career, he’s been terrified of having someone’s blood touch him, and now he has to drink it in order to live?!
