I would just like to let it be known that when I catch @queenjunothegreat it is in sight for putting these kids through this during Valgrace week. I’m sobbing violently, I am not okay.
“I'm doomed!” Leo whined as he laid dramatically over his nest. “Doomed!”
“You offered the idea to him first.” Jake said. His arms crossed as he looked down at Leo.
Leo rolled over to face his brother, “I didn't think he'd agree to it!” He hissed. “I just blurted it out. I honestly thought he'd forget about it!”
“Mhm…” Jake sighed.
“When you told me he was a mess over this I didn't think you meant this bad.”
Michael, Jake's boyfriend, snorted. “You're gonna catch something on fire if you keep this up.”
“Hey!” Leo pouted, looking towards his brother. “Didn't you say he was here to help?”
“He is. But I also gave him full clearance to tease you. Because it's kinda funny how dramatic you're being.”
“Shut up.” Leo felt his face go warm. “You weren't any better when you first started crushing on Michael!”
Jake's face went red, “I was not this bad-”
“Totally were-”
“Can we not do this in front of him?”
“No,no, I'm kinda interested now.” Michael said, giving Jake a teasing look.
“This is supposed to be about Leo's upcoming date,we can talk about all my embarrassing moments later-”
“I'm holding you to that.”
“I know you will…”
“Hey!” Leo groaned, “It's not a date! Just…I'm helping him out is all.”
“Mhm…” Michael raised a brow. “And how many pretty rocks has he gotten you?”
Leo blushed brightly as he looked over at the small pile near his nest.
“Uuuh-”
“Yeah.” Michael shook his head. “At the least, he definitely likes you back.”
“But he doesn't know customs like that! He was raised by sorcerers-”
“Doesn't mean certain ones aren't engraved in him.” Michael said. “Finding and gifting stuff like rocks are instinctive, more or less for Fae.”
“Really…why?”
“Same reason for dragons. Especially as it gets close to nesting season. It started out more a sign of gathering prowess. You show you care about them and would help find supplies for a good nest if you joined their family.” Michael shrugged, “or, you bring something from the nest you already have. Pretty much showing you want them to be part of your home. Sometimes even giving one of your feathers. Suppose could say that's like how humans sometimes keep shirts and such from their partners. Keep part of them with you. But that's usually a more serious gift.”
Leo blinked slightly, “I-Well i kinda knew nest thing cause it's not too different from us- but is it really that instinctive?”
“Definitely. Before I even considered the idea I might've forming a crush on this metal head-” Michael playfully nudged Jake. “I saw small rock that I just immediately picked up and later gave to him without thinking. Wasn't until my older brother found out that it clicked.” Michael grumbled, “never heard end of that.”
Jake grinned, “It was very pretty rock though.”
“Shut up.”
“Okay…but- I mean- allopreening isn't that instinctive…right?” Leo blinked.
Michael rolled his eyes.
“Do I even have to answer that?”
Leo whined before falling back into his nest.
“I'm doomed.”
Jake patted Leo's back, “You'll be fine. Just act like your norm. You're overthinking this, you know?”
“I don't want to mess anything out between us!” Leo said. “What if I weird him out or something?”
Jake snorted, “If he's still around by now I don't think you got anything to worry about.”
“Hey!”
Jake laughed.
“Seriously though,” He said. “You'll be fine. Just be yourself or whatever.”
Leo sighed, “Fine.. yeah. I got this.” He said. “I got this.”
Okay, Leo did not feel like he had this.
As usual, he waited by their usual spot for Jason to show up. Nervously fiddling with his tail.
Jason was late, which cause worry to bubble up in Leo's chest. Did he get caught? Was he in trouble? Or just didn't want to see Leo anymore?
Leo knew Jason's father, the king, was strict on his son and their image. The fact Jason had to hide his wings and tail, and hardly knew how to properly take care of them, was testament to that. King Zeus didn't want anyone to know about Jason being fae, despite being half fae himself.
Though, Leo didn't know how fae genetics worked. Considering Jason told him he was the only one of his family to be born with full fae features. His sister and cousins primarily were just sorcerers. Why Jason had features like his grandmother.
“Gah-!”
Leo perked up when he heard a familiar yelp, relief rushing over him when he saw Jason, who had landed face first in the dirt.
“Man, talk about a graceful landing.” Leo grinned as he went over to help Jason up.
“Ha ha.” Jason spat out some grass as he took Leo's hand, his face reddened slightly as Leo managed to pull him back up on his feet and brush him off.
“Damn, what got you off balance today,Su Alteza.” Leo said as he looked up at Jason, feeling his heart flutter a bit when he realized how close they were. Immediately he stepped back, nervously fiddling with his hands.
“Didn't think you were gonna make it.” He gave a nervous laugh. “Thought you done bailed on me.”
“Sorry for being late, man-” Jason said, nervously rubbing the back of his neck. “Just, difficult getting out this time.”
Leo nodded, tilting his head a bit. “You alright? Didn't get into any bad trouble or anything did you?”
“Oh- no,no.” Jason shook his head. “I just…been feeling weird I guess? Was hard to take off tonight…as you can probably tell.” He chuckled softly.
“Oh?” Leo raised a brow. “You think you're getting sick. Cause if so, I might have to get someone cause I'm no medic-”
“I…I don't actually know?” Jason frowned.
“You don't know if you're getting sick?” Leo tilted his head and frowned. “That doesn't sound good.”
“Well,I don't know.” Jason sighed, “I don't feel feverish or whatever. But I've been struggling to get out of bed, I feel like I've been more on edge around some of the nobles…I think I growled at one?”
“Nice.”
Jason rolled his eyes, “I'm being serious,Leo- nevermind. Sounds stupid anyway.” Jason mumbled.
Leo's smile faded, “No-No man. It doesn't!”
“It's weird.” Jason said. “I think I've been molting more too? Which makes flying harder. I am still not sure how to preen them right…and been getting more easily distracted too. I hadn't been feeling as hungry-”
“Woah woah woah, hold up.” Leo said, placing a hand on Jason's shoulder. “You been losing an appetite, not wanting to get out of bed, molting, and been more on edge with certain people?”
“Uh…yes?” Jason said softly.
It suddenly clicked with Leo exactly what was going on, and he couldn't help but grin.
“Oh my Lords, Jace. You're nesting.”
Jason's face went red.
“I'm what?”
“Nesting! Oh my Lords! Is this your first time?”
“H-Hold on. Calm down, you're a bit too excited for this-” Jason said, fluttering his wings nervously. “What…what is nesting?”
Leo didn't know why he was so excited about it. It was just a natural thing, but Leo never actually seen a nesting fae before. Maybe it wasn't too different from what he's seen from his siblings, but he still was curious.
“Oh! Right! It's pretty much when a time certain species experience where their body kinda…prepares like it's setting up nest for either cooler mouths or if they're broody-i don't think that's you- so less leaving the nest except for food and supplies, getting snappy at people you're not close to or comfortable with, losing appetite, I guess molting feathers for said nest-”
“But..I don't really have a nest?” Jason frowned.
“Your bed counts as a nest! Just, wherever you sleep.” Leo shrugged.
“Oh.” Jason frowned. “Is this.. gonna be a regular thing?”
Leo shrugged, “For us it varies. I've hadn't nested at all, but few my siblings have. Man, you should've seen Jake when he was nesting! Kept trying to drag us to his nest!”
Leo found it pretty funny now, of course, but at the time it wasn't as funny. They just lost Charles, and Jake had taken up as the big brother. So when he immediately started nesting, it was less funny and more like Jake's response to grief.
“Guess it just depends on your emotions and time of year…” Leo shrugged. “For us anyway. No clue how it works for y'all.”
“Great…” Jason mumbled softly. “What.. What should I do then? I'm not sure if my father would be very happy with me being like this…”
“No clue.” Leo said. “It's kinda just something you got to power through.” He then lean up towards Jason to get more eye level with him.
“Buuut, if you ever need help I'm happy to. Or if you need specifically fae advice,I know a guy.”
Jason's face went red when Leo leaned up closer to him.
“Oh-uh- you do?”
“Yep!” Leo grinned. “Jake's boyfriend's a Sun Fae! I mean it might still be different since you're Storm Fae, but closer than dragon, right?”
“Uh-guess so?” Jason laughed nervously. “Though, I'm not sure if me being around a Sun Fae is exactly a good idea…”
Leo frowned, going back to standing flat on his feet.
“Why not?”
Jason suddenly found the ground interesting.
“Well…my dad's rules on non-humans and such aren't exactly…new. My grandfather was just as hypocritical. Even more so really…”
Leo blinked.
“Okay…?” Leo never heard Jason talk about his grandfather before.
“Until he was recently defeated, he still was keeping to his rules from before he was taken off the throne. Even in the small base he was hiding in” Jason bit his cheek. “Dad didn't really want to bother dealing with it until it affected him, and again didn't care much about non humans anyway…” Jason sighed. “But…Kronos took out a good bit of Sun Fae before he was defeated. And plenty of others as well…”
Leo blinked. He didn't know the old king had still been around in any capacity. Not to mention able to even take out so much.
“But, that's not your fault dude. You can't control your dad, and certainly not your grandfather! Come on!”
“I know- i know- but-”
“Jace. Really, man. You had nothing to do with that.” Leo said, gently nudging him.
“Right. Yeah…” Jason spoke softly before looking at Leo. “Man. I really don't know how I managed so long without knowing hardly anything about my own species.” He laughed nervously.
Leo snorted, “no kidding. Can't imagine.”
There was an awkward silence for a moment, just the two standing beside each other in silence. The only sounds were the wind ruffling the leaves, and their own steady breathing.
Leo was the first one to break it, of course, he couldn't handle silences.
“Sooo-” he bounced on his feet. “Still-uh- still need help with your wings?”
Jason's face reddened slightly.
“Oh-uh…yeah probably.” He gave a nervous chuckle. “If you're fine with it of course-”
Leo snorted, “Wouldn't have offered it if I wasn't, man.” He said, trying to ignore his racing heart. “Take a seat, your highness.”
Leo gave a show of bowing as he motioned towards a nearby log.
Jason let out a soft laugh, which nearly made Leo's brain short circuit.
Once Jason sat down Leo moved behind him to examine the fae's wings.
Leo had seen feathered wings before, some of his siblings had them, and of course Jake's boyfriend had them, so he knew Jason's wings definitely didn't look right.
They were clean for the most part but his feathers seemed dulled and out of place, as well as molts that seemed stuck.
When Leo started carefully preening through the feathers to get the molts out, Jason winced.
“You good, man?” Leo frowned.
Jason blinked, “Oh- Yeah, sorry. They just ache.”
Leo's brow furrowed, “Feel like I've asked this before, but now often do you stretch your wings?”
“Uh-once a night…?”
Leo face palmed, letting out a groan.
“You keep your wings tucked away, only stretch them once a day, and yet you still wonder why they ache?”
“Uh…yeah-?”
“And I thought I was bad-” Leo shook his head. “Gotta teach you some stretches, keep you from cramping like that.”
Leo continued to preen through Jason's feathers, trying to ignore the warm feeling in his chest. It really felt domestic, sitting down here with Jason like this. Removing old molts and repositioning the feathers why giving what advice to Jason he could. He probably should've asked Michael for more advice, but he really wasn't thinking. Maybe he could see if Michael would be willing to give some fae advice to Jason, Leo for sure was way out of his depth. It wasn't just stuff like wing hygiene, and nesting and all that. Fae specific conditions and instincts were something Leo had no clue about. Jason needed some experienced help in that regard, even if just a little.
Leo had been so deep in his own thoughts he hadn't noticed the soft rumbling sound coming from Jason until he had moved to place an old feather to the side.
He stopped,before managing a laugh.
“Oh my Lords Jace, you're purring!”
Jason turned around in confusion, his face red.
“What?! I'm not-”
“You totally are.” Leo grinned. “Take it wings are feeling better?”
Jason's face was still bright red as he tried to hide it.
“Uh- yeah. Yeah actually…thank you.”
“Of course man, hopefully you will be able to do lot of this easier on your own next time. I'm genuinely surprised you could fly with these things. Damn.” Leo snorted.
“I know- I know-” Jason mumbled. “Seriously though Leo…thank you.”
Leo grinned, “Anytime man.”
Leo still could hear Jason trying to stifle a purr, it was actually kind of adorable. He didn't even know fae could purr. At least, he never heard Michael purr before. Probably because Jake's own purr was loud enough on its own, plus, Leo was sure Michael likely would rather be caught dead than purr in front of Jake's siblings.
“You sound like a bird.” Leo said playfully.
Jason’s face reddened slightly.
“What?”
“You sound like a bird, the way you're going.” Leo grinned.
“I-sorry about that-”
Leo laughed, “What you sorry about, man? That's a good thing!” He said, “Means you're happy and content, I take that as a compliment!”
Jason blinked, “You do?”
“Yeah. I mean,I'd hope you feel safe with me to feel content enough for a purr.”
Leo really did, he wanted Jason to feel comfortable with him. Not just because of his very embarrassing crush, but because he really did care about Jason.
Jason stared at him for a moment, making Leo worry Jason actually didn't feel at all content around him, before smiling softly.
“Yeah. Yeah I am- I do.” Jason said. “Really Leo, you have no idea how much getting to see you these nights mean to me…”
Now it was Leo's turn to blush, feeling his scales heat up as well.
“Really? That's great, love being able to see you too, man- I mean- you know-”
Jason laughed, which made Leo's brain fuzzed. It was gentle, like a cool breeze. Leo could listen to it over and over again, it was almost ethereal.
“Yeah, I know.” Jason smiled, before faltering for a moment. “Actually- something I've been meaning to-”
“Wait, hang on-” Leo stopped Jason, perking up as he heard something through the trees. He looked around, trying to figure out the source of the sound.
“What is it..?” Jason whispered, looking hurt at first before perking up as well.
Leo couldn't tell, maybe he was being paranoid, but he swore he heard something. Usually no one else came this way though. Still…
“We…maybe we should move to a different location.” Leo said. “Need stretch those wings more anyway, right?”
Jason frowned slightly, looking from the trees to Leo as if trying to figure out what could be out there.
“Right, yeah. Let's get going.”
They didn't make it too far though, as Jason suddenly jolted, gasping as something hit his arm.
“Jason?!” Leo immediately caught him as much as he could as Jason stumbled. His saw Jason's feathers fluffed up, immediately noting to dart in Jason's arm.
He cursed pulling it out before trying to get Jason moving. He could hear footsteps and calls.
Hunters.
“Come on man, gotta get moving.” Leo urged Jason, who was shaky.
“What- who- can't-” Jason was mumbling over himself, whatever was on that dart was working fast.
“Hunters, come on man we gotta go. I'm not strong enough to carry you-”
Leo felt panicked. He hadn't dealt with hunters in awhile. Jake usually took care of patrols and keeping hunters away when their father wasn't around. Something Leo wasn't a fan of for a reason.
“Can't…” Jason mumbled softly, coughing out mist. “Heavy.”
Leo was expecting Jason to just pass out, instead he suddenly shifted into his smaller form. Leo just barely managed to catch him as he fell, holding him close to his chest immediately.
“Jace-” He breathed. “More of a warning next time-”
He didn't stray too long though after that, Immediately turning and taking off.
He could hear their footsteps against the ground, much faster than Leo had expected.
Leo did his best to lose them. Flying one way then the other, making sure to hold Jason as tight as he could. The hunters kept up way too well, like they were always on his heels.
It wasn't long before Leo ran into a dead end, skidding to a halt mid air. He looked up, trying to figure out if he could quickly fly up before they got too in range.
He yelped, however, when an bolt pierced one of his wings forcing Leo down to the ground.
He rolled as he hit the earth, hearing Jason let out a whimper. He cursed, pain searing through him. He scrambled back against the rocky wall best he could, letting out a low growl as the hunters came closer to view.
Leo blew out a warning flame, but the hunters just barely stepped back before laughing.
“Got nowhere to go, runt.”
Leo curled his wings around himself and Jason, still wondering how the hunters even got this far? They never came around here.
The lead hunter aimed her crossbow at Leo,he tensed up ready for the hit when she pulled the trigger, but it never fired.
“Huh?” The hunter frowned, before a roar rang from above.
“The fuck?!” One hunter exclaimed as his crossbow was suddenly yanked out of his arms by an unseen force, smashing into stone.
The lead’s was yanked from her as well, before a blur of copper hit her square on.
“Gah-” She gasped out before scrambling back.
“Leave.” A rumbled growl came from the copper red dragon now in front of Leo. His lips drawn back in a snarl.
The hunter swallowed, apparently not as brave when facing a dragon in creature form.
“Leave.” The dragon growled again, the other hunters armed soon dropping their crossbows in shock as the metal of the prods bent.
The lead hunter just quickly nodded, before stumbling up onto their feet and running off, their lackeys soon followed.
Leo let out a sigh of relief when they were out of sight, looking down at Jason in his hands. The now tiny storm fae looked pale, and shaky. He continued to breathe out mist.
“Leo!” He looked up as he heard his brother, who had now transformed back to his common form, running over to him. “You're supposed to be careful, what happened!?”
“They just showed up-! I don't know where they came from but-” Leo's voice almost caught in his throat. “Something’s wrong with Jason,I don't know what they did to him-”
Leo carefully pulled Jason away from his chest, showing Jake his condition.
Jake stiffened up as he looked at Jason, cursing softly.
“Come on.” Jake said. “Let's get you both to Michael, he'll probably know what to do.”
“What on earth happened?!”
Michael had been mid cleaning up by looks of it when they came in, Will by his side helping. Leo could see Austin and Kayla look over from the commotion,Kayla stopping mid preening.
“Hunters.” Jake said, sounding like he was holding back a growl.
“Hunters?” Will's ears pricked, before looking over to Leo. “Your wing!”
“It's fine, just a scratch.” Leo said,as much as it hurt he wasn't so focused on the pain right now. “Jason's in worse condition.”
Leo carefully held Jason away from his chest again, he was now completely curled up in Leo's hands, hidden by his wings.
Michael narrowed his eyes, his face scrunched up for a moment before going over to Leo.
“Can I see him?”
Leo nodded, carefully handing Jason to Michael.
Michael was surprisingly gentle when he took Jason into his own hands, Leo always seen him as full of nothing but attitude and sass for the most part, but the way his whole body language changed when taking Jason was anything but that.
When Jason let out a pained whine,Michael spoke softly to him.
“I'm here to help..” He told Jason, “Your friend won't be too far away.”
Michael moved to carefully place Jason down on a flat surface. He examined him, his hands glowed faintly for a moment.
Jason shuddered, letting out a shaky misty breath.
“Is- is that normal??” Leo asked worriedly, his head spinning. “He's been breathing out mist the whole way here-”
Michael tilted his head a moment before glancing at Leo.
“It's fine, it's likely his body is trying to regulate itself.” He said. “You should sit down, you're shaking.”
“I'm fine.” Leo said. “Ja-”
“Leo. You're still bleeding.” Jake said, gently gripping his shoulder. “Jason's gonna be fine, but you need to be checked out too.”
“But-”
“Come on fire boy-” Will said, placing his hand on Leo's other shoulder. “You can sit right here, you'll be able to see what's going on. I'll patch you up.”
Will motioned to a chair near where Michael was working, Leo wanted to argue, he didn't feel like he could stay seated, but his head spun again and he decided that maybe he was more likely to stay seated for longer than being on his own two feet.
“Right.”
Leo stayed focused on Jason the entire time Will stitched him up, just barely wincing when Will had pulled the bolt out of his wing.
Michael was focused on tending to Jason, his ears back and feathers fluffed up. Leo had never really seen Michael why he's healing, he certainly looked serious.
“Is he okay?” Leo asked, his head still spinning. “They hit him with something, wasn't poison was it-?” He felt anxiety prick in his chest, what would he do if Jason had been poisoned, would Michael have the means to cure it?
“Nothing lethal.” Michael reassured Leo. “It likely is a fae specific tranquilizer. Usually they're made to force us into our smaller form as well as knocking us out of commission.”
Leo stiffened up, “Why?”
Leo had a bad feeling. He knew hunters killed, he'd seen them do so, but never had he seen them knock someone out instead. Especially not when they had the element of surprise.
“Capture.” Will said.
“Capture?” Leo frowned, looking at Will who was almost done with his wing.
Will's ears went back, “Fae are often more useful alive than dead to hunters. So often they'd try to just make sure we're easier to contain. Especially with us being so rare nowadays…”
Leo's mouth went dry, the thought of hunters taking Jason made his hair stand on end. He didn't want to imagine what hunters did with fae.
“Maybe-maybe he shouldn't be coming out this far-” Leo said. “Maybe it's too dangerous-”
“Hunters don't come this far to begin with, Leo.” Jake said. “You couldn't have known.”
“It's dangerous him leaving to begin with.” Leo said, guilt heavy in his chest. “Maybe he shouldn't be seeing me at all…”
“Don't say that.” Will said.
“But- I mean look at what happened! If-”
“I doubt he's unaware how dangerous it is.” Will said. “But you really want him to stop seeing you? Do you really think he'd be okay with not seeing you again?”
Leo looked down, he didn't want to stop seeing Jason. He got excited every time he came. Yet, he can't let him be killed or worse either.
“I mean he'd probably move on fine- OW!”
Leo winced as he was whacked upside the head by Michael's tail.
“Hey!”
“Stop with all this.” Michael scowled. “self-deprecation is getting you nowhere. How long has he been seeing you?”
“Uh-” Leo scrambled to think. “A good few months? About half a year I think?
He remembered when they first met, not too long after Beckendorf's death. Jason's father had sent him to “get rid of a dangerous beast in the caves.”,relating to Leo's father. Leo had seen him coming into their range of woods near their caves and lunged on instinct. Of course Jason was pretty powerful and managed to over power him. He didn't strike Leo though, he hesitated. Leo still remembered the look in his eyes. Apparently, the thought of actively going through with harming or killing another creature by his father's orders upset him enough to accidentally summon a small storm above them. Leo was able to clock he was fae pretty fast after that.
“You really think he'd move on? He's been sneaking out just to see you for months. That's a dedication I don't think he'd just forget about. He's his own person, he can make his own choices on if he's willing to risk leaving the castle. Don't try to make that choice for him, Valdez.”
Leo looked down, biting his cheek. He wanted so badly to keep Jason from harm's way. Yet, Michael was right, it really was Jason's choice. Not to mention, Jason still was learning how to properly care for his fae aspects. Would he just go back to neglecting them if he had no one to help him learn?
“Right. Right yeah- I know. He's grown up and all that.” Leo mumbled. “Did you really have to whack me earlier?”
“It shut you up enough to listen, didn't it?” Michael grinned. “Now instead of worrying over all this, get some rest.”
Leo frowned, “What about Jason?”
“He'll be fine, he needs his rest too.”
“But-” Leo bit his cheek. “Would his absence be noticed if he's out for long? I mean he definitely needs to rest but-”
“It'll be fine.” Will piped up. “I talk with Nico about it, he can deal with keeping anyone from noticing. He likes any excuse to mess with King Zeus anyway.”
Honestly, Leo definitely forgot that Will had been with Jason's cousin for a good bit now. Honestly it was kind of weird to think of, though he never actually *met* Nico.
“Right.”
He blinked as Jake gently nudged him.
“Come on, let's get you laying down. You can see Jason when y'all wake.”
Jason awoke in a haze. He tried to think as he slowly opened his eyes to dim lighting. There was a moment before his eyes adjusted and unblurred, before immediately panic set in.
“Leo!” Jason gasped as he sat up, his first instinct was to try and fly off before immediately landing face down on the hard surface he was on.
“Woah-” He heard a voice near him as someone came close, he stiffened and immediately scrambled to his feet again only to fall back. This time feeling a hand catch him from behind. His heart was thumping in his ears, his feathers fluffed up as he blinked, trying to get his bearings.
“Easy,Grace. You're not in the state to fly, so take a breather.” He heard the person near him say. He frowned, blinking again before looking around to get a better view.
He was in what looked to like be a thick grove, nest nestled in the large tree branches. He seemed to be on a stone table, cold but steady.
The person closest to him, one that kept him from falling off, was what caught his attention. Especially the wings behind him and their longer hair tipped ears.
Fae.
“W-What- sorry- where-?” He tried to speak, still feeling groggy but enough to remember who had been with him.
“Leo!” He gasped, trying to fly again only to fall back, being caught in the other's hands.
“I just told you not to-” The other fae sighed, setting Jason back on the table. “Valdez is fine, Jake managed to get him to sleep.”
Jason blinked, before looking towards where the other's tail was pointing.
They were right, curled up in a nest nestled on the ground nearby was a sleeping Leo, curled up protectively around was a larger were-dragon who Jason assumed was Jake, Leo's older brother.
“The-The ones who attacked us-”
“Hunters.” The fae said. “Poachers specifically,Jake scared them off, they didn't hurt either of you too bad. They hit you with a tranquilizer, and Valdez got hit in the wing but it'll heal.”
Jason grimaced, feeling guilty. Leo got hurt and he was practically useless. Despite how weak he was, some part of him wanted to snuggle close to Leo too.
“You-uh- healed us?” Jason looked at the other fae.
“Will helped Valdez the most. I made sure to help flush the tranquilizer dart from your system. Valdez was pretty worried about you.” He said before getting a tiny cup with water and placing it down by Jason. “Drink. You need the water.”
Jason swallowed, “Uh- right…thanks.” He took the water, sipping it quietly. He looked up at the other fae for a moment, an odd feeling of self consciousness hit him. The other fae's ears were longer, more animal-like. Jason's wasn't. He wasn't sure why it made him feel so self conscious, but he curled his wings around himself as if to hide them.
The other seemed to notice it.
“Michael, by the way.” He said, his tail flicking back and forth.
Jason looked him over, “You're..Sunfae, right?”
Michael nodded, “Yep. Little different than Stormfae, but close enough.” He shrugged before looking at Jason. “Your body doesn't seem to be used to being in this form. You don't leave your common form, do you?”
“I- Common form?” Jason frowned, was this vocabulary he should know?
“Your size closer to humans and such. We tend to call it our ‘common form’, given its closer to what most other species are like.”
“Oh.” Jason blinked. “Uh- I guess I don't go this small much, no…is-is that bad?” He asked.
“Not necessarily.” Michael huffed. “But your body is straining itself more often. It also takes longer to adjust when you do shift.”
Jason winced, that made sense…though he knew it was hard to find room to do so.
“Right…” He said softly, his eyes drifting to Leo again. He noted one of his wings wrapped in bandages, again guilt settled into his chest.
“He's fine.” Michael said like he knew what Jason was thinking. “Don't beat yourself up.”
Jason frowned, looking over at Michael.
“I know, I just feel bad I wasn't much use.”
“Considering you probably never had run- ins with hunters like this before, I say being hit with a tranquilizer isn't so bad.” Michael snorted. “Valdez was gonna worry about you no matter what given your situation, he acted accordingly and you two got out alive, that's all that matters.”
“I.. yeah. Yeah you're right. I really don't know what I'm doing out here.” Jason looked down. “I knew you all dealt with poachers but I didn't think they could do that…” He shuddered, hugging himself. Being knocked out instead of just simply killed somehow terrified him more. Not only as a prince but as a fae. He heard how nobles talked when they felt Zeus couldn't hear them. As much as being forced to hide his fae nature strained him, sometimes he felt it was for the best. “I still.. Leo's done a lot for me. He's helped me get use to preening and everything. I been molting more recently and so it helped a lot. I should've been more up to help. He could've gotten killed.”
Jason felt his feathers ruffle, again resisting the urge to go and curl up close to Leo.
Michael glanced him over for a moment before huffing.
“You really hadn't been told much, have you?”
“Huh-?” Jason turned to look at Michael. “About.. about fae stuff? No.” Jason shook his head. “I mean, Leo told me what he could about somethings…but only what little he could.”
“Hm. Thought so.” Michael nodded. “Has he figured out your nesting?”
Suddenly Jason felt his face flushed.
“W-Wha- Is it really that obvious?!” He squeaked.
Michael chuckled, “I've grown keen eye for signs with my siblings, you clearly hadn't been eating or drinking as much as you should and you've been making pretty broody sounds any time you look to Valdez.”
Jason blushed more, “I have-?”
“Very badly so.” There was a knowing smirk in the sunfae's expression. “It feels embarrassing, trust me I know, but its normal.”
Jason looked down, fiddling with his tail nervously.
“Leo kind of pointed it out after I told him how I was feeling off… I didn't really know that was a thing.” He sighed. “I.. this might be a weird question-”
“I've heard plenty,shoot.”
“Uh-” Jason swallowed. “Could..a crush bring nesting on?”
He felt stupid asking a complete stranger it, but he really didn't know how any of this worked and- well it felt nice to actually have someone like him in some fashion to ask.
Michael seemed to smile at the question before chuckling.
“Yeah. It can.” He said. “Stress can bring it on too though-” He took a glance towards where Jake was still curled up around Leo protectively. “It can be a lot worse in that case…”
Jason frowned, he felt like there was a story there but he decided not to press.
“Right…” He breathed, part of him felt a tiny bit more sure of his feelings from that alone. Still some part of him was still not so sure. He really didn't want to ruin what they had.
“You'll be surprised how well your body knows your feelings before you do…” Michael said, looking at Jason. Again, Jason felt Michael knew exactly what he was thinking about.
Jason didn't stray too much on that thought aside he perked up immediately when he heard movement from away. He could hear Leo giving a whine as he stirred.
“Jaaake.” Leo groaned, trying to wiggle his way from his older brother, who seemed to only cling tighter around Leo in his sleep. “Come on man- You're gonna suffocate me!”
Michael laughed, even Jason couldn't help but smile slightly.
He felt a pain in his chest as well, however, he didn't really have much in siblings the same way Leo did. He had his older sister Thaila, but she hardly came around the castle anymore. Jason loved her, and he knew she was much happier than she was at the castle, but he did feel her absence in his life heavily. He had other siblings, but most at best weren't around or ignored him, at worst they seemed to despise him for being favored by the queen.
Jason was glad Leo had his siblings to be there when he needed them, he hated that part of himself felt almost envious of that.
“Jace!” His thoughts were interrupted when Leo seemed to notice he was awake. Apparently giving him the boost to finally wiggle his way out from his brother's dragon snuggles and scramble over. Jason nearly forgot to breathe once Leo was right over him.
“You're awake! Are you okay? Is he supposed to be still in his small form?!” Leo turned to Michael to ask. The sunfae just rolled his eyes.
“Yes. He's fine, he'll just need a moment to build up the energy to shift. Don't hover over him so much, Valdez.” Michael swatted Leo back with his tail, making it where Leo wasn't looming over the table ,and Jason, as bad. Jason let out a breath he didn't know he was holding, he hadn't realized how big Leo now seemed at this size. He trusted Leo with his life, but it was hard not to tense up with someone much bigger than you was so close, so fast.
“Uh. Sorry-” Leo swallowed, looking at Jason. A look in his eyes Jason couldn't read.
Michael sighed, “Im gonna deal with fussy lump of scales over here-” He motioned towards Jake, who was half asleep whining in his dragon form, “Just don't crowd him too much and you'll be fine. I'm checking on that wing later too.”
“But I'm-”
“Did that sound like a suggestion,Valdez?” Michael raised a brow. Leo glanced away quickly and shook his head.
“Good.” Michael huffed before heading over to fully wake up Leo's brother.
Once Michael walked off, Leo immediately lowered himself so he was more eye level with Jason.
“You okay, man?”
“Yeah. Yeah I'm fine. Just tired.” Jason managed a smile. “That's your brother's boyfriend I assume?”
Leo chuckled, “Yep, he can be a bit scary sometimes though. I think he bites.”
“ You do too, remember?” Jason grinned, thinking about when he and Leo first met and Leo had managed to bite his arm.
“Hey! I said sorry!” Leo whined. “It wasn't that hard anyway.”
“Mhm. “ Jason chuckled, feeling a warmth in his chest. Feeling relaxed with Leo near him now. He really couldn't believe they had gotten as close as they were. He'd been sent by his father with the idea of dealing with the “winged pest” as Zeus had put it. Despite that, he'd ended up befriending Leo instead. If his father ever found out, he was sure he'd have a fit.
It worried Jason that Leo could get hurt, yet he just couldn't bring himself to pull away. He felt selfish for it.
Maybe he truly loved him more than he thought he did.
“I'm just glad you're okay, man.” Leo pulled him from his thoughts with a sigh. “Spooked me there.”
“I..sorry.”
“Not your fault!” Leo chided. “Just-” Leo seemed to look Jason over which made the storm fae feel flustered, his tail sparked a bit.
“I don't think I really seen you much in this size. Kinda weird seeing you so small, its kind of adorable.” Leo laughed before seeming to realize what he said. “I mean-uh-”
Jason felt his face flush before managing a slight laugh.
“Adorable, huh?” He said playfully.
Leo's cheeks seemed to flush, “I-well-shut up.”
Leo groaned, hiding his face in his arms on the table.
Jason smiled, managing to get up and closer to Leo. He sat right in front of him, feeling heat radiating off him.
“Hey..” His voice softened, feeling his heart do a leap when Leo rose his head from his arms to look at him. “I nev..we never got to have that discussion I wanted to have.”
Leo stiffened up, smoke billowing out his mouth for a moment.
“Oh- yeah.” He said. “What did you want to talk about?”
Jason took a steady breath,if he wasn't nervous before he was now in such a small size.
“I just…seeing you regularly been one the best things in my life, and i've never really had a friend like this before…”
“But…” There was a hesitation to Leo's tone.
“I think I've been feeling…something more than just platonically- but I not sure?” Jason breathed. “I don't really know what the difference is supposed to be…i know I like and trust you. I'm just unsure if I'm starting to feel more or not, and I really don't want to ruin our friendship- but…I felt least I could be open about it…”
Leo just stared at him, eyes widen in shock. Immediately Jason regretted saying a thing. Did Leo think he was weird now? Maybe he should've waited, maybe just not said anything at all-
“You.. think you like me? Like, romantically?” Leo finally spoke, blinking at Jason in confusion. The fae was cursing every decision he just made in the past few moments.
“I..I think?”
“You're not sure?”
“I mean- Im not sure what its supposed to feel like? I think it might be but its hard to tell cause what if it's just me feeling strongly about our friendship-”
“You seriously don't know?” Leo was starting to laugh now, Jason meanwhile was starting to wish he'd be chucked against a wall instead.
“No. I don't- I'm sorry i shouldn't have said anything it's stupid-”
“No no- its not!” Leo said quickly. “It's not stupid!”
Jason looked away, feeling hot in embarrassment now.
He nearly jumped when he felt Leo lean closer before feeling his hand gently cup behind him.
“Jace, man…” Leo said. “I mean it, none of that is stupid”
Jason couldn't stop himself from melting against the warmth of Leo's hand, which rose a warm laugh from Leo.
“I-”
“Would it help to say I'm pretty sure I like you like that?” Leo grinned.
Jason immediately felt himself get warmer. Did Leo just confess to him? Maybe he was still under the effects of the tranquilizer and hearing things.
“You do-?”
“Yeah-” Leo cupped Jason more in his hands, seemingly without thought. Jason felt his heart race, Leo's hands were so warm. Comforting. Jason melted into them quickly.
“But,if you're not sure how you feel there's no problem with that man” Leo went on. “We don't have to change anything if you really don't know. Man, it took me a bit to realize I even liked you in that way. I get trying to figure that out, trust me.”
“I gue- I guess we could.. take it one step at a time?” Jason said.
“Your sized step or my sized step?” Leo teased.
Jason groaned, “Oh shut up.”
“One step at a time.” Leo agreed.
Jason smiled, suddenly feeling weight on his chest lift. He'd been worrying over how this would go for awhile, it was almost embarrassing with how easy it went. Maybe they hadn't set up anything official with their relationship, but maybe that wasn't necessary. It just felt right being close with Leo, platonic or other wise.
“You're purring again.” Leo's laughed, bringing Jason from his thoughts.
He went red as he realized he was in fact making a churr like sound again.
“Uh-”
“Man. I thought you'd be more dog than cat like- or, maybe you're more bird.” Leo grinned. “Comfy?”
“Yeah- Yeah-” Jason fluttered his wings before nuzzling a bit further into Leo's hands. “Not my fault you're warm.”
Leo's face flushed,a little fire light in his hair for a moment before he grinned. “That so? On the opposite end you're very cold.”
Jason nodded, “Ah- a bit.”
“Got an idea.”
“What?” Jason frowned as Leo pulled away, before turning into his dragon form. Which wasn't too big, size of a big dog at most.
He then surprised Jason by gently picking him up in his mouth before heading over to one of the empty nest and setting him down in it.
Jason didn't have much time to process before Leo was curling up around Jason, nuzzling his muzzle against him.
“That warmer?” He made a rumbling chuckle sound.
Jason felt his face grow hot, unsure if it was from his face blushing or from being so close to Leo in his dragon form, or both.
“Yeah- yeah that's warmer.” He managed out, after processing what just happened he slowly nuzzled Leo back.
“Thanks.”
“Get little bit more rest, man.” Leo said. “So you don't look like you'd been beaten to a pulp when you have to get back.”
Part of him didn't want to go back, pretending to be something he isn't, but that wasn't fair to his cousins and those few he was close to.
So he just nodded before snuggling closer to Leo, he could hear his heart beating steadily. He let himself relaxed to it and before long he drifted off to sleep.

In front of him—bright and alive—Leo stood up suddenly, clapping his hands together. "Well, the good news is that you've got me now. And I," he grinned, pulling a tape measure from his tool belt, "am basically an expert at turning empty spaces into something awesome. Remember the Argo II?"
"You're going to build me a warship in my living room?"
Leo laughed. "Sure, man. If that’s what you want, I’ll build you a warship.” His grin was crooked. “Nah, I was thinking I could stick around for a bit and make you some furniture." Leo paused, studying Jason's face. "Only if you want, though. No pressure."
Jason looked at the blank walls and empty corners. The place felt more like a waystation than a home.
"I think I’d like that," Jason said slowly. He met Leo's eyes. "You'll help me?"
Leo's smile softened. "Course, Superman.”

Vignettes of Jason and Leo's life together after the war. For Valgrace Week day 1: Jason's Birthday.
Happy (belated) birthday Jason :-) anyway this is my contribution for VALGRACE WEEK!!
Valgrace week day #5! I'm really excited about this one because its mutifandom with Percy Jackson and Steven Universe! Lapidot was my absolute OBSESSION 2 years ago and now I got the chance to draw them again with my new obsession Valgrace
Hiiiiiii everyoneeeeeeee~! I'm an old lady who goes to bed with the sun half the time, so I COMPLETELY missed out on the Archive coming back online yesterday lmao. But! Never fear I am here now! I'll post this one-shot and the next chapter of Flightless Birds now, then I'll post another one-shot this evening. I MAY post chapter 4 of Flightless Birds, too, but I may hold off. We shall see.
Anywho, here is Valgrace Week 2025 Day Three Four: The Cadence of Fervor
“Meet me in the quad outside of the student union at 4:30,” he demanded the first time they spoke to one another.
Jason blinked up at him, trying to connect the dots in his head. “What? Why?”
“I don’t study in the library,” he said with a simple shrug. “They don’t let you eat in there and reading makes me snacky.”
“You’re asking me to study with you?” Jason asked, bewildered.
“Telling you to, but that’s semantics.”
“Why the hell would I do that? I don’t even know you.”
“My name’s Leo Valdez, and this–” he slapped his own test down, revealing the 100 written at the top– “is why you’re going to do it.”

Jason bit off far, far more than he can chew when he could chew when he signed up for a physics class. Enter Leo, determined to make Jason pass their shared class, and a mentorship that is more than either of them bargained for.
VGW 2025 - Fervor
When Jason signed up for classes in his second year of university, he made a mistake. A grave mistake, quite frankly. He’d been told he needed a science credit and, without too much thought, signed up for the physics class being offered that fall. He remembered taking a physics class in high school and enjoying the hell out of it, so he figured this would be a fun, chill class for him to just get his science credit taken care of. He wasn’t a genius when it came to math or anything, but he was decent enough at it, and physics usually made use of math in a way that just made sense, unlike a lot of normal math classes. He figured it would be fine.
It was most certainly not fine.
It took about three days for Jason to realize just how tragically in over his head he truly was. Turns out, the class he’d taken in high school was basically physics for toddlers, and now he was the lone history major in a classroom full of students in their second or third year math and science degrees. They just seemed to get it in a way that Jason was pretty sure he’d never understand. It was like they were speaking an entirely foreign language known only by people who recited the Fibonacci Sequence with the serenity of a Buddhist meditation chant and the reverence of a Hail Mary. Jason liked math, really he did. He liked the fact that numbers didn’t lie, and they always did what you told them to do, so long as you knew how to tell them to do it. That being said, the moment he was out of this class, he was never looking at a number outside of historical documentation ever again.
But there was one good thing about Jason’s dismal attempts at learning physics, and that one shining, wonderful bright spot came in the form of one Leo Valdez. Leo was an engineering major, some specialized track that Jason couldn’t wrap his head around no matter how many times it was explained to him, and he was taking the physics class for an easy A. He slept through most of the lectures and only ever turned in half the homework, but he was always the first person done with his test, and the only time he ever made less than a perfect score was when the professor docked points for not showing his work or properly answering essay questions. He was smart, so smart it took Jason’s breath away sometimes, but more importantly than that, he was kind. He’d seen Jason on the cusp of a breakdown, head in his hands as he stared down at the bright red 24 Much better! written at the top of their second test, and decided that he was making it his personal mission to ensure that Jason passed the nightmare physics class.
Jason squinted down at the paper, shoving his glasses up his nose. “What’s the catch?”
“No catch, this is completely selfish,” Leo said. “You’re obviously failing this class and your whole cloud of despair over it is seriously harshing my nap vibes, man.”
Jason felt his cheeks heat up as he considered Leo’s offer. Truth be told, he was going to fail this class on his own. He could, theoretically, just drop the class without any impact on his GPA, but all of the other classes he needed would have been filled, and with a double major, he really didn’t have any time to waste on not taking a full course load every semester. He was already looking at hiring a tutor, but if Leo was willing to do it for free… “Alright. Fine.”
Leo startled, like he hadn’t actually expected Jason to agree. “Wait, really?”
Jason shrugged. “Worth a shot. You’re right, I’m gonna fail without some kind of help. Might as well start with you.”
Leo grinned at him, his smile crooked and his nose scrunched up under sparkling eyes. “Alright then. Yeah, cool. See you this afternoon.”
“See you then.” Jason felt his own lips curl up into a smile. “What kind of snacks do you like? I’ll bring the food if you bring the brain.”
Leo laughed then, loud and bright and completely unabashed, and their fate was sealed.
From that moment on, study sessions became a regular thing with them. Despite his hyperactive, fast-paced demeanor, Leo was a remarkably patient teacher. He’d baby Jason through a problem as many times as it took, but more impressive by far, he could also turn on a dime and approach the subject from a completely different angle. If he went over something with Jason more than three times, he’d always stop himself, pause to think for a moment, then explain it in a totally new way that almost always made something click in Jason’s head. Even his encouragement was something else, and when Jason actually passed their next test, Leo’s pride had reminded Jason of Thaila shoving his college acceptance letter under the noses of every girl in her band. They’d celebrated that night by going to Leo’s favorite pizza place and knocking back drinks and greasy pizza in tandem until they were both giggling and falling all over one another. Jason still hated physics, but he loved those brilliant afternoons when Leo would give him that beaming smile when Jason finally got something right.
Eventually though, the end of the semester had to rear its ugly head. Somehow or another, Leo had managed to haul Jason up to the point where he squeaked out a shaky but official B minus. Leo had obviously been very proud of them both (though Jason suspected he was mostly proud of himself) but he’d seemed almost sad when the professor handed back their graded finals. Heart pounding and lower lip bitten a little raw with nervous energy, Jason hopefully asked if they were still planning to meet that afternoon.
“I mean, class is over, Jace. You don’t need me anymore,” Leo grinned wryly. “So long as you keep your nose out of any more higher level math and science classes, I have nothing more to teach you, young padawan.”
Jason swallowed down the sour taste in his mouth. His mind desperately scrambled for something not stupid to say. Something that might make Leo stay. “That’s a Star Wars reference, right?”
Leo winged up one of his eyebrows so fast Jason thought it might just fly off of his forehead. “Uh, yeah. Duh.”
“I’ve actually never seen Star Wars, so I don’t know anything about it,” Jason confessed, desperately suppressing the urge to fidget nervously. “Do you, uh, think you might be willing to tutor me in that, too?”
Leo just stood there and blinked at him for a moment, and Jason really wanted to melt into a humiliated puddle of goo before that brilliant smile he’d come to love broke out from behind the clouds. “I could be convinced. These classes will cost you, though. Hundred bucks a pop.”
“I dunno,” Jason grinned, feeling his heart beat faster in his chest. “That’s a pretty steep price.”
“I’m worth it.”
“You are,” Jason confirmed, just to see Leo’s startled fluster. “Still though, I think a negotiation is in order. I could take you out to dinner and bring you peanut butter M&Ms?”
“You, Jason Grace, have got yourself a deal,” Leo agreed with showy grandiosity.
“And a date?”
Leo cut a glance at him, eyes sparkling playfully. “Maybe. Depends on how you play your cards tonight. First, you’re gonna have to have correct opinions about C-3PO.”
Fortunately, after just one movie, Jason did have a correct opinion of C-3PO (“I like him. He’s a little fussy, but I think that makes him even better, personally.” “Okay, yeah, I’ll go on a date with you.”) and from that day forward, Jason and Leo practically lived in one another’s back pockets. Piper, Leo’s best friend in the world, accused them of being “obsessed with one another” and “codependent in the most morbidly fascinating ways” and just “in general weird about each other” but Jason didn’t care. The idea that someone could have any sort of claim over Leo and not be obsessed with him seemed beyond the realm of absurdity in Jason’s book, and he was pleased to note that Leo apparently felt the same about him. Their relationship was a little strange sometimes, sure, intense in ways that made people give them funny looks, but it was theirs, and Jason didn’t think he could be happier.
They even managed to keep up the whole tutoring thing between them. Jason was very careful not to take any more math and science classes above his pay grade, but he still loved to learn, and he really loved to learn from Leo. So Leo would teach him. Sometimes, it was math and science, sometimes it was about some sort of engineering thing he’d come up with, and sometimes it was about giant robots that could turn into cars.
Leo’s original focus for his afternoon lecture had been some niche Transformers thing, but Jason honestly couldn’t be sure if he was still talking about that or not. Leo had been talking about some Transformers theory he’d seen, and Jason just innocently questioned what “rigor morphis” was, which set Leo off in the most beautiful way. He’d started talking, growing more and more excited with every word, gesturing with his hands as he explained what he was talking about. In the beginning, Jason had listened closely, asking relevant questions in between handing Leo pieces of candy, but before too long, he’d been reduced to just sitting there and nodding, staring at Leo with blatant adoration.
“Which is why, mathematically, the Matrix of Leadership should totally be possible to create, assuming we were able to get our hands on the right stuff,” Leo concluded breathlessly. “Does that make sense?”
Jason just gave him a wide, beaming smile. “Absolutely not.”
Leo faltered and scowled. “What? Why not? I explained that, like, super well. I didn’t even use big boy math.”
“I’m sure you did a great job explaining,” Jason said earnestly. “But you also started speaking Spanish about halfway through, and I was only catching, like, every third word.”
Leo blinked at him in shock. “I– What?”
Jason nodded, feeling fondness welling up in his chest like nothing he thought he’d ever get to feel before he met Leo. “Yeah. Sometimes you code-switch when you get excited, and you get really excited about Transformers.”
Leo groaned and hid his flushed cheeks in his hands. “God, why didn’t you say something? That’s so fucking embarrassing.”
“I like it,” Jason said simply. “I love watching you get so worked up and passionate about stuff that your mouth starts moving too fast for your brain to keep up. Seeing you love stuff like that is just– It’s beautiful.”
Leo’s face turned so red Jason could practically feel the fever heat radiating off of his cheeks. He twiddled his thumbs in his lap, but Jason could see the very pleased smile he wore. “Oh, that’s– That’s cool.”
“It is,” Jason agreed easily. He reached out, and Leo allowed himself to be pulled close so Jason could kiss him. “You enchant me, Leo Valdez.”
Leo let out a soft breathless laugh and kissed him back before leaning in to speak directly into Jason’s ear. “Well, seeing as love apparently brings out the Spanish in me, I have something very important to say to you, Jason Grace.”
And then he started speaking, every foreign word round and beautiful. Each syllable made Jason’s ears tingle pleasantly, and his chest filled with warm, bright joy. He couldn’t understand the words, but he didn’t need to, not really. He didn’t need to know the words when their meaning was written on Leo’s face, woven into the cadence of his voice, and lovingly etched onto the walls of Jason’s heart. When Leo spoke his last word, Jason kissed him again, his hands cupped around Leo’s jaw, silently echoing the sentiment right back at him in his own indecipherable language.
