Driving to the library in the next town over for the monthly meeting of the Apple users group I'd managed one way or another to hear about a fair while ago (at least somewhat before the first iPhone was announced) and have been going to since, I wondered a bit about the "silent auction" I'd seen mentioned in the latest meeting notice...

Inaugural Charlotte PowerShell Users Group Meeting Recap
Last night I made the trek down to the Microsoft Charlotte office for the inaugural Charlotte PowerShell users group. Jim Christopher (@beefarino) did an excellent job getting this event kicked off with a bang having the Scripting Guy, Ed Wilson {@ScriptingGuys), present on PowerShell modules. Attendees were also fortunate to have Teresa Wilson, the Scripting Wife (@ScriptingWife), there as well.
One of my favorite parts of the event was the variety of user experience in attendance. There was a fairly even mix of experienced users and individuals who were very much beginners. Ed did a fantastic job presenting the material so that everyone could follow and have something to take back to their environments. The questions hit on a variety of points from further explanation about variable assignments to explanation of why module manifests were worthwhile. I'll skip details from the presentation and discussion as it was recorded and that should be available in the near future [and linked on here of course]. Discussion was also made about the 2011 Scripting games which really got me interested in possibly participating in 2012.
The night ended like all good user groups do…giveaways! There were several of Ed's PowerShell books and O'Reilly press gifts given away. Oddly enough despite my excellent track record of winning I missed out just barely. By just barely I mean #14, #15, and #17 were select at random as winners. I was #16 although I still consider myself a winner since Ed used Get-Random to choose the winners. That explanation will be in my next post. In truth I didn't need to win and I'm happy for the winners but it gives me an excuse for another post!
I definitely hope that if you're in the Charlotte area for the next meeting in February that you stop in and participate. Jim mentioned wanting to go script club some with this group and I think it's an excellent idea. I see great promise in this group given the enthusiasm I saw from Jim and the attendees. I'm not a stranger to running user groups (CIPTUG and VMUG) so I know a good thing when I see it. Well done Jim! Blogger Note:
One thing that I have seen more of with PowerShell community events is that there is a diverse use case for PowerShell. The problems that I face using PowerShell are quite different then many other people I talked to during the evening. On the flip side of that coin we are all trying to solve our individual problems with a similar set of rules so there is a tremendous amount of commonality. It was great talking with other PowerShell users who deal with desktops, Active Directory, and SharePoint as I never touch these technologies. This is an impressive win for Microsoft and I'm looking forward to seeing the future of this powerful tool and the technologies it touches. It also means that it is very important that you participate and share your PowerShell experiences, even if you're just a PowerCLI jockey like me. Your local PowerShell user group is a great place to do that!
May the -force be with you!
