1. how long have i known about them

Same time as Diana- around the beginning of May in 2017. I think I knew she was the main character of LWA at that point.

2. whether or not they’ve ever made me cry

Naaaaah.

3. whether or not i have any merchandise/objects with them

I have her nendo, the LWA Chronicle book, and I forgot to mention this but a few fan made keychains, Ticcy’s Gala book, and Milk Puppy’s art of her and Diana printed out on my wall LOL

4. what about their personality i like

She’s not afraid to say what she wants and do what she wants. It can be a drawback, but at the same time I also believe you’ll never accomplish something if you don’t try for it in the first place. So yeah Akko sucks at things but she doesn’t let the fear of failure stop her and at least tries.

And well, she’s a bad student but she tries. Which already puts her above Amanda’s lack of effort in my book. But Amanda has her own circumstances XD

5. what about their backstory makes me emotional

Honestly I think Akko’s lived a pretty good childhood as far as what canon’s given us. The part where she so happily watched Chariot’s show and then unknowingly got her magic stolen from her is probably the worst. And I guess if you tie in the fact that Croix basically called her unimportant since, you know, she’s just a regular person watching Chariot’s shows.

6. the moment of theirs that made me the saddest

That part when she finds out Ursula = Chariot and that betrayal.

I KNEW IT WAS COMING BUT WHEN SHE FINAL-FUCKING-LY HOVERED ON HER BROOM IN THE FINALE I WAS LIKE “GOOD FUCKING JOB YOU FUNKY LITTLE WITCH”

8. something about them that made me laugh

Akko makes the best faces honestly.

Her casual outfit with the big coat and stuff.

10. my favorite moment with them in canon

Croix and Chariot have their weird lover’s spat and unrequited love thing that is really more complicated than it should be.

Then Akko comes in, previously heartbroken about the revelation of her idol and mentor, and just Shiny Arc’s the monster that’s about to kill both Croix and Chariot.

You go my child. Go be a badass and show those adults that you’re stronger than them both.

She’s also super badass in the finale when she’s using transformation magic against the missile gone rouge.

Like, this is the witch who started from nothing and sucked at magic so much that everyone assumed she would drop out. And look at her now.

LOOK AT HOW BADASS SHE IS. WHAT GOOD GROWTH. And it’s a realistic improvement too. She doesn’t suddenly become OP, it doesn’t take one month of training for her to get super good. Nah. It takes her an entire year to get this good. And she still has a lot to improve.

11. my favorite relationship they have with another character

I like the big sister/motherly relationship Chariot shows Akko. Of all the professors, Ursula is the only one who ever helps and believes in Akko. I don’t think it’s purely because Akko found the Shiny Rod or because she feels bad for taking Akko’s magic either. She wanted to help Akko because Akko struggles, and just wants to be a good mentor when no one else will.

12. what i like about the way the fandom portrays them

She retains her “genki girl” personality from canon, so that’s at least accurate. Also her bad luck and prone to injury traits are... definitely there LOL

So this is... honestly a personal preference thing and not a criticism of any fan works at all. And this is certainly different now.

When I first joined the fandom I was astonished at how many fics focused on Akko angst and not Diana (my fav). So that’s why I started writing and eventually uploaded the Mending Hearts series. I like seeing my favs suffer, but unfortunately Akko isn’t my main fav in LWA. It took me over half the series to even tolerate her. But she’s in my good book now.

And honestly, there’s nothing wrong with writing angst for her! Especially since she is prone to rash decisions and therefore injuries more so than someone as careful as Diana. I’m just unreasonably and unfairly picky.

14. what i liked about the way canon portrayed them

So I’ve never been a fan of genki girls who are stupidly stubborn to the point of absolute selfishness. And Akko was just too stubborn and self centered for me to immediately warm up to. Again, I’m a bigger fan of the cool, stoic, and talented ones who help others and are respected in return.

But that doesn’t mean Akko doesn’t care about other people. It’s just that her goals are very self-centered (which is fine don’t get me wrong) and that affects her actions and the story (since she’s the protagonist). And she doesn’t have the capabilities to back her up (in the beginning), so a lot of the first cour was me putting my hands on my face and groaning into infinity while trying not to scream “Please shut up and sit down you fucking idiot.”

If she had stayed like that and somehow fixed plot points, I would have gotten mad. But LWA does a good job of showing how Akko’s actions have consequences that not only punish her, but also her friends. She needs to grow and improve in order to even proclaim her goals.

Also, as selfish as she is, she is genuinely nice and caring of her friends. Honestly, I probably wouldn’t mind Akko as a friend. I’d probably smack her upside the head a few times though.

And her friends love her in return.

What’s also great is that she gets no convenient power up during this development time. Finding the Shiny Rod is definitely a protagonist thing, but she also had to go through a lot of trials and personal growth just to be able to use it properly.

Akko from episode 1 and Akko from episode 25 are different people. And I’m glad to see her grow.

15. what i dont like about the way canon portrayed them

What was that bs from episode 21. What happened to patience that she learned from episode 15? Why was she so mean to Ursula when Ursula has always been the only one nice and understanding to her? Why did she trust Croix, a fucking stranger who just came to Luna Nova, over this kind and caring professor who has been with her since day one???
