I got laid off from my job of 2.5 years on Friday.
They claimed the usual âreduction of workforceâ which is nice in that I got (one! whole! month! of) severance and can file for unemployment, but itâs complete and utter bullshit. My role is being eliminated but a new role is opening up with a different title that does nearly all the things I was doing. Degree-requiring positions facing âcritical skills shortagesâ include nurses, teachers and engineers, it said. 3) Without intervention, the shortfall in skilled labor would be spurred by retirements outpacing similarly qualified workers entering the labor force and the creation of almost 700,000 new jobs requiring postsecondary education

I wouldn't be surprised to find they think AI will replace that particular demographic, i.e. people with higher education. Why else the cuts in the US Dept of Education?
The shrinking population is not going to help matters.
