The road was once US 101, the coastal route connecting the Pacific Northwest to the Bay Area and points south. US 101 has now been rerouted somewhat to the east. When this was the main route, it was a jaw dropping interlude driving through a forest with some of the world's tallest trees. It still is jaw dropping, but now it is a scenic byway.
