Q: What is urodynamics?
Urodynamic test evaluates the function of the urine storage in the bladderand voiding. The tests evaluates the bladder, urethra, urethral sphincter, and other related systems to assess how they are functioning. Urodynamic tests are simple to perform and usually painless. They can be done without sedation and take about an hour to complete.
Q: Why is this test ordered?
Urodynamics are ordered to help diagnose issues with the bladder and related systems. They may be useful following a stroke or back injury or when an obstruction of the urethra is suspected. In addition, urodynamics can be employed to evaluate the presence of medication side effects.
Q: Do I need to avoid taking any medications prior to the test?
Yes, certain types of medications need to be stopped prior to the tests. Disclose everything you are taking to your doctor, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal remedies. Your doctor may give you further instructions, but the most important medications to avoid are cold medicines, tranquilizers, and other agents that have an effect on the nervous system.
Q: What are the main types of urodynamic tests?
The most common tests include uroflowmetry, electromyography, cystometry, and a pressure/flow study, usually performed in that order. Uroflowmetry measures the strength of flow during urination, as well as the amount of urine left in the bladder following urination. Electromyography is a measure of the muscles in the pelvic floor, both while the bladder is being filled and when it is being emptied. Cystometry involves filling the bladder with clean water and subsequently monitoring for any abnormal behavior. Finally, the pressure/flow study shows how much force is required to start urination.
