TYY, lovely! ykw my brain js went blank too, you aren't alone! on personal experience with academic rivalry (ahem, didnt turn into lovers) I'll say..

Reasons why your ocs can be academic rivals:

one is a hardworking overachiever while the other person seems effortlessly achieving, so a rivalry occurred.

their friends made a bet on who would crack first under the pressure of finals weeks and so now they both gotta do their best

it's all fun and games for A to see B trying to beat them

admiration turned competition

confusing the feelings of wanting them to wanting to be better than them

their families putting them up against one another

one corrected the other's math on the chalkboard in front of the whole class in 3rd grade. now a raging rivalry.

easy going, flirty A x over thinker B that hates A's guts because B has feelings for them - and there formed a rivalry or atleast from B's side.

or maybe A never thought they were rivals until B said so.

being told that you always gotta be the best one in the room and you were, up until some bastard came in and stole the spotlight so now u r fated to be rivals?

previously best friends, now rivals because, one went away without resolving an issue with the other and the other tries to out rank / be better than them every chance they get. leading to a lot of angst.

one finds a library book with notes they don't necessarily agree w and keeps adding their opinion to it, while the other aka the one who was originally reading that book is absolutely pissed by that

one is the professor’s favorite and the other is the professor’s most vocal critic. but both of them secretly hates that professor :)

social status pushing them to constantly compete with one other while they both do not want to, have tried to talk it out, but it ends up worse than where they started somehow

one constantly interrupts the other’s presentations to "clarify" a point (str4ngulati0n is the solution atp)

one student peer-reviews the other’s paper and leaves it more red than white and the other wants to find the arsehole that did it and it's someone that they're clashing ranks w them

a messy intuitive genius A vs a rigid, hyper-organized perfectionist B + never agreeing with each other's ways.

oh! having all their family and friends write a letter for them in a specific theme, or with a specific keyword and surprising them with it

being by their side throughout the day

renewing vows (doesn't have to be marriage vows, just intentions of the relationship)

making a video edit for them of them when they weren't noticing you were recording

making a video edit of all their friends and families wishing them hbd and talking good things about them

write them a journal throughout the year and gift it

or one letter per month so one has 12 letters to gift their lover on their bday

do for them, what their passion is, i.e.,

if they're an artist, paint them as a gift. if they're a musician, sing for them as a gift. If they're a programmer, code a simple website saying ily to them etc etc

candle lit dinner and dancing if one can't afford much more

writing them poetry about them (i did this for my bestie)

taking them to see the stars and to make a wish

"I've got you," they say when you were about to step into the rain without an umbrella

arms brushing walking under a single umbrella together

their thumb wiping away the dried raindrop from your cheek, their touch lingering longer

both of u are wet, now under a shelter, glancing at each other, then away, hearts thudding with a flutter

"you said you didn't like the rain?" "not anymore" and their eyes are searching yours. you're the reason why.

happily going under the rain and they ask, "are u crazy?"

^ "no, you're uptight! come here!"

and you both sway and dance and laugh under it

"Do you love the rain?" they ask. you look outside the widow and feel a sense of calm wash over you. "Yeah," your voice is quiet, "I do." and somehow they've become symbolic to rain.

when they kiss you, tasting rain in your lips

it may be brief or just a brush of the lips but it sends shiver down your spine

maybe its the rain or its them but both of u part feeling vulnerable

"Come with me. Please.. I'll make u hot chocolate.."

hands pulling you tighter against their side under the shared umbrella

^ "not u getting all touchy touchy with me," u tease and they chuckle warmly at that

kissing their cheek under the umbrella as u bid goodbye.

"remember i thought it was raining when you squir-" and you clamp a hand over their mouth, face red.

their cheesy grin and stealing kisses under the rain, carrying you and twirling u like a fantasy come true
