Świnoujście Ferry I, from ongoing documentary project on how the post-transformation Poland manifests itself in architecture and urbanism.
Świnoujście is a town in north-west corner of Poland located on 44 islands. Bordering Germany and being a location of one of the biggest seaports in Poland together with a ferry terminal on Świnoujscie – Ystad routes, the town struggles wit an infrastructural problems of no stable connection to the mainland part. The only means of communication between the city centre and land – where railway station or ferry terminal are located – is a ferry, going in circles each 20 minutes. The trip takes about 10 minutes, and in effect the whole connection is drastically congested by traffic, extending travel time to over an hour during peak hours. The town, a popular holiday resort for both polish and german holidayers, currently undergoes preparation to build a tunnel, which in effect would replace the ferry connection. The estimated cost of the whole investment is estimated at 1 billion of PLN (~240 million euros). The first public tender for the contract had been disabled by protesting companies.
