Winfield and Minnie Pearl the Love Letters: Part III
Some of the letters between the two were when Minnie Pearl Higley was attending the University of Chicago and staying in Foster Hall, studying to become a teacher while Winfield was helping with the family businesses in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Waukegan, Illinois.
Winnie is one of the young ladies pictured above, whoever noted on the back suspects she is the one on the lower left side.
This letter from Winnie is full of love from corner to corner.
“What is love, dear? I know now, better than I ever knew before. It is something that gets into one’s very bones and makes him tremble all over when he thinks of a dear little girl that he loves better than life itself. If you were only here, now. We could sit here on the davenport, right up close, oh, so close, and I could put my face down in your dear neck, that is so soft and sweet, and you could put your arms tight around my neck, and then my sweetheart, how happy we would be. Forgive me dear, for all this. I am afraid it will make you all the more lonesome. But I am blue to-day, but will be better to-morrow, I will want you then, though, just as bad for, I love you! I love you!! I love you!!! Winnie.”
We have a folder of correspondence from Minnie to Winnie. Some are little notes she left while visiting him but the bulk of it is regarding the run-up to their wedding in the last half of 1916.
There is more to this story but in the spirit of the day, we will leave it here.

“One of my classmates asked our professor on one of the last days of class, ‘Why did you choose to study math?’ My professor started drawing these different 'worlds' of math on the chalkboard, like linear algebra and algebraic topology, and drew connections between them—lighting up as he described studying math as being a traveler of worlds. ‘It's incredible; It's just beautiful.’ I'm pretty sure half the class was tearing up by the time he finished talking. It was really the first time one of my instructors had shown so explicitly genuine passion for what they were doing, and that was admittedly quite, well, 'beautiful,' especially when that came from the same person who kept telling us to live a little whilst we were undergrads, to ‘eat ice cream and watch Westworld.’”

Today is the first day of Scav! #TBT to last year, when one of the Scav items involved placing a life-sized cutout of Dean Nondorf on the main quad to give passersby admissions advice. Pictured here are real-life admissions officers with some cardboard Dean Nondorfs!
