CULT | The vernissage exhibition of Vincent Van de Waal
So on Thursday (also know as the day our weekends -sometimes- begin) Me and Touba went to visit an art exhibition of this guy named Vincent Van de Waal. Now this name ringed a bell somewhere far, far away in the back of my mind, but I didn't seem to remember it so we just went (surprise effect). And that's how we got in this small, let's call it a pop up gallery, on the third floor of an (awesome) streetwear shop called Avenue. First we had to climb stairs for about three years, there was no light, only some chrismassy mini led lights on the floor, following the stairs.  Almost 5 heartattacks later we got in the third floor (need.to.work.out. Not. Who am I kidding.)First thing we saw: a bunch of tatted hipsters, some with matching gold teeth, all very swaggy. Second: BAR! So we hit that and went to search for some art!  Now let me tell you a bit about Mister Van de Waal. He has graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 2006 as graphic designer. His work is characterized by its direct and uncut nature . A strong personal attitude and a undeniable graphic sensibility. (they say) What we saw was a lot of death in his work. Now 21th of December had passed and we are still here (amen), but on Thursday we were still in doubt if we were going to live so this sudden encounter with death was creepy. No I'm just kidding it was great. Hello, free drinks? Kidding again. Back to Van de Waal. As you can see his parade of very-to-the-point work was all in black and white, which actually made it very alive! Also, everything was made by hand, we didn't see any sitting-behind-the-computer work. It looked so fresh, one moment I told Touba 'you see the strikes from the pen, it looks like it's still wet. He might have made this whole thing 4 hours ago, on the second floor'. Lol. She didn't think it as funny, maybe because she was intimidated by all the hipsters and the very, veryyyy straight forward art. She might look like an adult, the girl is still sixteen, hooked on tumblr (you know that place where everything is great, calm and peaceful and we are all cats? yeah.) Btw, the name ringed a bell because Van de Waal has also been collaborating with Patta. He designed many of the brand’s graphics and also got involved in their clothing design. BAM! Conclusion, very eventful and exciting evening. I even saw Willy from The Opposites (a very funny little man, who had a little too much to drink, from this Dutch hiphopduo you probably don't know (shame on you + google that shit). That's it for today, have a nice christmas eve (or a random good night if you are like 'go to hell with jesus'!). Cheers, Farah.   What did I say? TO THE POINT ART! THE ARTIST. Touba acting all 'HEY I CAN HANDLE THIS' VAN DE WAAL - Me - WILLY Le Drunk from the Opposites
