Oh, Momma!
I have a confession to make: I like Cracker Barrel.
I know - the place is totally uncool. with its rocking chairs and giant checkerboards and kitschy nostalgia for a world that no longer exists and probably never did.
And I expect the foodies in my life to heap scorn upon me if word of this gets out. But where else can you get "Momma's Pancake Breakfast" at 7 p.m.? You know ... when nothing else will do.
While in school, my daughter worked at the CB in Okemos -not in the restaurant, but in the store. Her job, she said, was to talk grandparents - forced to walk through the shop coming in and out of the restaurant - into buying over-priced tchotchkes. for their grandkids.
My, oh, my - where did she get that cynicism ...?
I realize Cracker Barrel is not a place for fine art, or sophisticated tastes, but it's solid and unpretentious and Momma sure knows her way around a griddle.
