Small venues and unknown bands!
I seriously have to recommend going to see unknown bands in small venues. You get the chance to see and hear them...
- even if that don’t make it big and/or give up (not necessarily related to whether they’re any good of course);
- when they’re from another country and are good enough to think it’s worth their while to travel all the way to London and not make any money just to get heard;
- while they’re experimenting and trying out all sorts of musicianship and before a manager or a record label cuts out half their repertoire, leaving only what they think will sell;
- while you can invite your mates to come and see them without it being prohibitively expensive for them to take a chance (especially as live can be so different from studio recordings and YouTube)
- while there aren’t any barriers and bouncers between you and the band (and you can still rest your beer on the stage), and certainly before they only play venues that are too big and no fun (and probably too pricey);
- while the audience is there because they like them and are still willing to dance (rather than standing there with their arms folded, tutting if you come and go to fetch beer, etc)
And if you don’t like them, it’s not cost much, and you can always enjoy your friends’ company at the bar or outside having a smoke.
