It’s funny that JJ Abrams hates the Prequels and really wanted to distance the Sequels from them because somebody really gave Rey her own personal Watto in Unkar Plutt. They’re both unscrupulous ugly misshapen alien businessmen who are corrupt and unhelpful. They have this abusive dynamic over the desert-dwelling Jedi protagonist where they helped raise them but not in a way a father would’ve. There’s this weird twisted affection for the protagonist deep down and so they’ll be “nicer” to them for it than with others but it’s pretty superficial in the end and our hero was right to get tf out.
Like I think it’s interesting how TFA had this deleted scene where Plutt somehow followed Rey to Takodana and confronts her out of nowhere and despite being an established combatant you can see her practically regress into the helpless kid being pulled away by this domineering adult before Chewbacca does Rey a solid and rips Plutt’s arm off for her.
It’s a neat scene but ultimately should’ve been cut because it didn’t add enough, felt obtrusive, and to me operates on this surreal and fleeting dream logic like the whole thing feels like a dream that just comes and goes. But again Plutt does have this ownership of Rey that he tries to hold onto and if the deleted scene was kept or is still considered canon he’s like if Watto followed the gang all the way back to Naboo before Obi-Wan chopped his arm off or something. Both Watto and Plutt are a reminder to the Jedi who destroyed Darth Sidious that before all of that, the biggest problem in their life was unserious small-time crooks like these men and they can’t always escape that.
Unkar Plutt if only 3/4 of him got born: one quarter bortion
