The Universe as Consciousness: A Logical and Coherent Investigation
The quest to understand reality leads us to a frontier where analytical thought and advanced interpretations of physics meet long-standing philosophical wisdom. This investigation presents the fundamental hypothesis that the universe is not a collection of separate and inert objects, but rather a unitary manifestation of Consciousness — a term that, in its broadest sense, defines the essential nature of Being. The coherence of this model is established by merging Modern Philosophical Idealism with Non-Dual Mysticism, validated through an analysis of the conceptual implications of contemporary science.
The principle that reality must be fundamentally one forms the foundation of the entire argument. This view is found in philosophies that seek Non-Duality, where the separation between the individual and the Whole is considered an illusory construct. Thinkers such as Alan Watts and the Advaita Vedanta traditions propose that Being is indivisible. In the Christian esoteric context, the same logic applies: the Christ Consciousness or the “Kingdom of God” is an inner and immediate state, not an external domain, confirming that Unity is the logical state of existence.

Kastrup argues that matter — including the brain — is not the fundamental substance, but rather the external appearance or “translation” of the states of the Universal Mind. The brain, in this sense, is merely the visible image of the mental process when observed from the outside. The model posits the existence of an all-encompassing Consciousness (Mind at Large) as the basis of existence, and the coherence of the world and the fact that we share identical descriptions of reality are only possible because we are individual, interconnected expressions of this Universal Mind. Mind, therefore, is the hypothesis that explains shared experience with the fewest assumptions.
Furthermore, physics, at its deepest level of empirical inquiry, offers implications that reinforce the unitary model. The famous Double-Slit Experiment demonstrates that the behavior of particles is conditioned by the act of observation. This empirical fact raises the serious question that Consciousness cannot be a passive epiphenomenon of matter, but rather an active and fundamental factor in the manifestation of reality. At the quantum level, reality dissolves into relationships and interdependence, denying the idea of isolated objects. This scientific description of the world as a unitary field is logically consistent with the vision of an indivisible Universal Mind.
The conclusion of this investigation, grounded in the search for the most coherent hypothesis and the analysis of conceptual evidence, is that the cosmos is a single, conscious process. To describe the universe as God is, in this context, to affirm its fundamental nature as Mind and Consciousness — and to recognize our inherent Unity with It.
