Love, Death + Robots: Beyond the Aquila Rift
David Fincher and Tim Miller are producing this series and I have to say I really like it. Since I often have the attention span of a gnat, I especially like this series, because each episode is a short. No episode is over 17 minutes and some are as short as 6 minutes. This episode was especially enjoyable because it’s science fantasy but also fits neatly, with a surprise ending, into the horror genre, despite the shift in setting residing in an unexpected grid coordinate of mapped space.
Thom, Suzy, and Ray are the only crew aboard a vessel that appears a bit too luxurious to be heavy industry but the mission and purpose embarked on isn’t really defined either. They’re waiting to be sent home by the dispatch system called Arkangel. As events unfold we are displaced with Tom in what could be a single delusion or a carved out reality within more than one mind.
I should point out that without being a retread, this episode is a clever story with elements found in 2001 A Space Odyssey, Alien, and The Matrix. It’s complete with cryo-chambers for hyper sleep, plausible time dilation, and an alternate reality blended with the substance of Thom’s own waking world and what inhabits an undercurrent beneath his threshold of perception that is essentially entombed within the entity of space and time.
Overall, this episode is an enjoyable ride visually. The story is thoughtful and not cheapened with jump scares or needless dialogue explaining everything to the audience with crayons and markers. It provokes a terrifying contemplation of the phenomenon of existence, and challenges the audience’s place in it.
All this is accomplished in under 16 minutes leaving out the roll of credits.
Though David Fincher is co-producing this series with Joshua Donen, Jenniffer Miller and Tim Miller, it bares mentioning that Fincher has planned on shooting Arthur C. Clarke’s Rendezvous with Rama (1972) using performance-capture for years now. It’s disappointing to hear that will probably never happen. But this series makes up for that...Well - sort of... I liked Clarke’s book and realized reading it, that it was an impossible film prior to the advent of CGI. At least that’s my position. If you don’t understand what I’m saying you probably haven’t read the book. Material like Beyond the Aquila Rift is proof Rendezvous could be shot, if Fincher could ever get a script. If he had as much creative latitude as Kubrick did on 2001, it could be an exceptional film. I would still love to see the screen adaptation of this interesting book. It is gargantuan in scale considering the designed environment of the artifact discovered floating in space. That alone is enough for me to want to see it.
Beyond the Aquila Rift is directed by Léon Bérelle, Dominique Boidin, Rémi Kozyra and Maxime Luère. They comprise the driving force of Unit Image, an animation studio specialized in visual effects, CGI, movies and Video Games. There are some great credits to their name and I hope to see more from the producers and directors of this series.
