okay these are sort of messy thoughts and i don't think i've really yet found the language to really articulate them in a nuanced manner yet
but like i am interested in thinking of “hierarchies of cool” as a replacement for or parallel to “technical proficiency” in a musical landscape after the advent of “punk” as an identifiable, reduced thing
because i feel like “technical proficiency” hasn't been eradicated as a signifier of quality so much as replaced by some new fetishization.. a fetishization that i think of and observe in conversations that happen about “outsider art” – an exoticization of a lack of technical skill or training that i find equally as dangerous and fascinating as the automatic equating of technical skill with musical “quality” (quality of course also being something worth mulling over and unpacking and thinking about)
in this new space and context a lack of technical skill becomes a new badge, a symbol, and like almost all countercultural symbols it can be manipulated and commodified and narrativized and turned into currency
