so i fell asleep in psych yesterday and my psych teacher filmed me unconseunsually while i was sleeping and showed the video to the class without my permission OR my parents permission (i am a minor), asking my classmates to “analyze my behavior” and forced me to answer his “survey questions” as to why i may have been sleeping. he then told me he had deleted the video, only for me to later discover that he had shown it to the rest of his class periods that day.
this is a reminder to students that it is illegal in the U.S. for teachers to film you during class without your consent, and/or if you are under 18, your parents consent. if you are ever put in such a situation, report the behavior to your administration. do not excuse their behavior simply because a teacher is in a position of authority.
this is a reminder to educators that under no circumstances is it acceptable to film students without consent. under no circumstances is it acceptable to subject your students to public humiliation, regardless of whether or not you consider it to be a “teachable moment”. it’s not funny and it’s not cute. it’s illegal.
