hanging out with a 2yo, surrounded by other adults, has made me realize how much adults are unable to see the baby as her own person.
i spend a lot of time just listening to her to hear and see what she wants, and go along with it. sometimes i suggest activities if she doesn't have any but otherwise its Her World, i'm just there to supervise and maybe reinforce which colors are which
so we're quietly drawing with chalk, but then adults came over and interrupt and are loud like "hey baby draw this! look what i'm doing! do you see this? lets dance! cmere!" when she is clearly Already Doing Something
she is not a toy!! to just swing around to entertain you!!! she is Occupied, which is enough of a blessing for a 2 year old, just leave her be! and it also feels like a bit of an ego trip; they want to say that the baby wanted to hang out with them
i also have a consent-based approach with...everything. if i need to pick her up (for safety or otherwise), i always tell her first. if its optional, i ask if i can pick her up; she assents by putting her hands up, and dissents by giving a clear "no!" (which is AWESOME). if i need to touch her -- "i'm going to wipe your hands"; "i'm fixing your shirt" -- and even her parents have said she doesn't fuss when i do it.
but other adults just scoop her up, make her give kisses, touch her hair and her neck where she's clearly agitated and tries to push them away. what're we doin folks?? she clearly fusses at that?? give her a high five or be okay with her ignoring you. she's 2, she's got her own agenda!
i didn't ask for anything when i left, but she came to me to give me a hug and a kiss. her parents said she's never done that before (except with them). wrow. its almost like respecting a kiddo's space and body means they like you willingly (also we're literally besties did you guys see my pebbles #mypebbles)
all the queer stuff, the homeless guy ranting, disability and recovery, atypical love, friends you've cherished and friends you've lost, the people you can't understand and the people that don't look like you - that's humanity, ripe and sweet and messy and gushing with joy, staining lips and fingers
