by Cats on Mars (Music by Tommy Pedrini) for ULTRANIMBUS presents: ULTRANIMBOY Art by e.D. Xu (Forgotten Treehouse) A special "hand-held" edition of Cats on Mars' forthcoming single, Nintendo Generation! I think I first wrote this song ten years or so ago, yet rarely has it seen the light of day; although it's been through many iterations, this most recent evolution as a chiptune anthem to childhood is my favorite. "NinGen" is an upbeat, happy dance tune, but also a contradictory celebration and condemnation of the Millennial Generation and our tendency to bury ourselves digitally in our search for something both beyond, and as an alternative to, the real world. While the forthcoming single will offer a more detailed exploration of this escapist contradiction, I couldn't resist the opportunity to first bring forth an 8-bit version of the song, in homage to the original traveling world-in-a-box. Our Game Boys were our youth, the simple boxy precursor to the modern-day trend of every digitally-connected human drowning themselves in immersive entertainment, fueled by tiny, hyper-advanced computers we carry around with us all the time. Those of us who shut the world away as children to save Princess Daisy or capture Pokémon were but pioneers in the latest trend of human evolution -- either toward a beautiful, interconnected age or a dystopian, robot-enslaved nightmare. Maybe both. ♥ By the way, if you like this, please follow our band's SoundCloud and keep an eye out for our other releases: http://soundcloud.com/catsonmars - Tommy (Cats on Mars)
