I was thinking recently about newspapers in the interwar period especially just before the war (Iβve been recently trying to get my hands on Dribergβs Colonnade that begins in β37 if you want elaboration), and I was wondering if there were any specific newspaper columns you find interesting? (Sorry for being specific!)
Hi! Please don't apologize β specific is exactly the kind of question I like getting. And yes, please do elaborate on Driberg sometime; now I'm curious. π
I'll be honest: I very rarely find myself reading newspapers in real time. The ones I'd actually want to read are hopelessly paywalled or demanding a new email address every three pages (cough cough British Newspaper Archive). That said, I did comb through the Trove collection last week and through the Newspapers.com archive recently, so this is a good excuse to post some of what I found β mostly material related to David Low, Ramsay MacDonald, and Rose Rosenberg, MacDonald's secretary from 1923 to 1937. More on all of this to come!
On the column front β expanding slightly into magazines, which I hope you'll forgive β the two that come to mind most readily are Charivari from Punch and Low's Topical Budget from the Evening Standard. Most of the excerpts from my recent Punch scans are from Charivari: typically a few pages long, it mixes short jokes drawn from real news and anecdotes across current events, covering everything from film and fashion to politics and everyday British life. Low's Topical Budget serves a similar function but with sharper political teeth β featuring prominent figures of the time alongside Low's own recurring characters like Colonel Blimp and Muzzler.
On the German side: Kladderadatsch ran a summary spread called RΓΌckblicke with small cartoons recapping the previous month or two, which I find charming as a format. Ulk also has these wonderful rubberhose-style cartoons, though they're entirely in Kurrent β old-fashioned German cursive that even native speakers find difficult β so I haven't been able to include any here yet β someday. In the meantime, do let me know what you make of the Driberg when you track it down! π

I made a quick sketch out of boredom. Ulk in my style. To me, she turned out so adoeable. So beautiful that I thought she might have been Stery's secret love

Ulk #45 (nov. 1926) - Cover by Lisbet Juel (1903-1977)
