To his credit, he isn't horrible—and to the dance's, she finds it to be much more enjoyable than the slow, swaying waltzes that have been encouraged all evening. There's a subtle pressure at her back and a fleeting pull at their joined hands, an assessment all on its own; the dance isn't one that allows for any measure of comfortable distance, and so she's well aware of every shift and twitch and tension and give as they draw near and break apart, shoulder to shoulder, chest to chest.
Then the music builds, and they alongside it. She redirects her weight, angles a step that carves its own path a half-beat before his cue—and then she's the one leading, usurping it from his hands with a pleasant enough smile.
"You follow better than you lead," she says, not quite an insult, not quite a compliment. "But I suppose that's charming in its own way."
