DĂšn an Sticir - Tidal loch with two islands connected by stone-built causeways. The outer islet has been used as a secure stronghold since prehistoric times. During Iron age, between 100 BC and 100 AD, a massive galleried broch was built. The causeways were even narrower and sometimes included a rocking stone, which could alert the occupants of the broch to the approach of unwelcome visitors. In Middle Ages a rectangular hall was inserted into the pre-existing circular broch, and the larger middle island, the âEilean na Droch Chomhairleâ (Island of Bad Council) also contained at least one substantial building.
