Okay so we know the Happy Fun Ball ends up corrupting Caleb but my brain went to -- what if it fractured Caleb? What if it split Caleb into different versions of himself? Competent scary grrarrg teen scourger Caleb, who uses cold logic and has no sympathy believing the Nein are liabilities, overly excitable kid Caleb before all the trauma who loves the Nein, feebleminded Caleb from Vergesson who attacks from raw trauma and fear not malice when the Nein try to help, and Caleb's final form omniscient, terrifying gentle corrupted Caleb who wants to make the world better but thinks the only way is through utter control.
And the only way to save him is to shove all the pieces of Caleb back together.
