I think you’re right about this fandom being really intense. I’ve been around the block a couple of times with fandoms and even if there has been a lot of excitement in other fandoms especially building up to a release/premiere/big game, nothing has ever been as intense as the 1D fanbase (from my perspective at least) and it can be quite scary and intimidating and I do sometimes get the feeling that I’m too old for this fandom because I just can’t relate to all of that
You have no idea how nice and important it is for me to hear that. I think one of the aspects of this fandom I’ve got the most trouble with is the... performative aspect of it? Like, Niall puts out a song, you’re SUPPOSED to be freaking out about it. It’s expected. Your dash goes up in flames, and if you don’t feel like joining it, suddenly it’s like you’re at a party, standing in a corner looking at books on the shelf while everyone else is having fun. So you end up either forcing yourself to act all thrilled, or grumbling to yourself about kids these days and how you don’t need anyone to have fun.
That’s the part I think gets to me the most. That’s why I end up blacklisting ten words in one go, or making counter-posts about how not-thrilled I am, just because I still want to participate, but i can’t make myself fake enthusiasm. I don’t know. I love everyone on my dash, I love seeing them happily freaking out, I’m not saying I want them to go away. But clearly I need to find ways to cope with this without turning into an old grumpy grandma. :p
