Another NYC institution will close on October 11th – The Coffee Shop on Union Square. Its owner-founders, former models Charles Milite, Eric Petterson, and Carolyn Benitez, cited rising rent, the soon to rise minimum wage, and a large payroll (they have 150 employees) as the causes. Opened in 1990 it became known both for its photogenic staff, many of whom were themselves models, and their often curt attitude... the last time I visited I experienced the later but not the former! Appeared regularly on HBO's Sex and the City where the gals would pow wow about blah and blah, it also appeared in The Devil Wears Prada and Jessica Jones. Prior to 1990 it was a Greek diner (I'm assuming called called Chase?! Based on the pictured mosaic doorway sign), their iconic neon sign was installed during this tenure in 1960. It was one of the last non-chain restaurants in Union Square. This reminds me of my intro to #typography in college. I loved photocopying letters, blowing up by 300%, cutting them apart and creating new designs. For a #typegeek, it was life changing.
