.....do people not realize that fucking with someone like this can be a source of legitimate pain? like, when you “just fuck with” me like this, especially if it’s about a special interest, it drives me a little crazy.

imagine someone, seemingly randomly, decided that you were some ethnicity that you’re not, and started treating you like a caricature of that ethnicity- asking you to say things in “your” language, saying things about how people “like you” are hot-headed or sexy or dirty or whatever. imagine the sheer frustration that you’d get from someone acting like this, the horrible sensation that you’re falling down a rabbit hole and everyone around you is going crazy. the need that you’d have to correct this person, to get them to fucking stop acting like this.

and then imagine that after you corrected them on it- repeatedly- and they kept doing it... a bunch of strangers on the internet decided to start laughing at you, because you didn’t realize they were “doing a bit”.

like.... when someone is deliberately and consistently wrong about something I care strongly about, I need to correct them in the same way you’d need to correct someone fucking around with you like that. it doesn’t matter whether they’re obviously joking, whether they are clearly playing with you, because the frustration and pain is the same.

...it’s not about Authority. It’s not about ego. it’s about the fact that seeing someone be so wrong, so clearly detached from reality, is painful in the same way that someone assuming ridiculous things about you would be painful to most NT people.

taking the worst, most commercialized end of fandom, judging ALL fandom by that metric, and being snidely superior about it

i’m in the sims 2 fandom. sims 2 hasn’t had an official update since 2008. it’s abandonware in every sense of the word; EA would prefer to pretend it doesn’t exist anymore. 

sure, there have been other sims games since then, and if you’re into those, you’ve got to do an amount of ~consumption~. but sims 2 fandom? mate? it’s mostly people seeing just how far we can push a game that’s nearly old enough to vote.  

can you set up a farm with custom-built animated animals and a diverse array of crops? (yes.)  can you build an entire medieval town, complete with its own economy? (yes.) can you make your sims do unspeakably depraved things, complete with custom animations and noises? (yes, ofc.) 

all of this is possible thanks to the hard work of lots of modders who bust this game open for free in their spare time. no one is getting paid for this (apart from maybe some donations if they’re having a hard time, but let he who has not cyber-begged in this day and age cast the first stone). in fact for Sims 2 it’s largely a community norm that Paysites Must Be Destroyed; if you’re charging money for your mods, you’re going against a whole lot of precedent.
