So I was looking for shorter mini-campaigns to listen to because my attention span right now is not the greatest, and I thought I’d try NADDPOD’s Twilight Sanctorum. It’s a four episode mini-campaign, and it’s excellent. Very good choice on my part.
In a twilight city of sin on the borders of the Shadowfell, where the undead mingle freely with the living amidst a vibrant nightlife, three generations of a family of roguish private eyes get embroiled in the affairs of a nightclub dancer with ties to vampiric nobility, ghoulish mobsters, and insidious health cults.
DMd by Emily Axford, it’s a spooky fantasy noir with a party of absolute muppets at the helm. The Vantasmo clan of PI rogues is a New Jersey style bundle of belligerence and strained relationships and loudly expressed caring, and they’re both hilarious and oddly touching. You’ve got a tired widower of a mastermind grandpa, a slightly overeager divorced arcane trickster dad, and a complete little shit of a thief grandson. The mystery behind the case is genuinely interesting, as are the party’s … solutions to several problems. I also love how they tie off this case at the end of the four episodes, but there are enough hooks for further entanglements that you can easily imagine future cases for this family of nutjobs.
Some personal (and slightly spoilery) notes on finishing it:
Talk to me about the Vantasmo dicks
You have literally monsters and creatures and you ask me about three human men? Idc, they have boring human peens.
mavid truly sucks so much and it’s the funniest thing in the world
The flashback in Twilight Sanctorum where Frankie is thinking about his life with Linette, and Murph describes how broken and distant current Frankie is from the version who had Linette, it’s really heartbreaking. And do you think Murph was looking across the table at Emily, the women with whom he’s built a life, fantasy worlds, stories and music as he described how ruined his character became without this woman in his life? How losing Linette stole the joy from him. Because I do. It always occurs to me that Murph the actor is talking to his wife about how his character Frankie never recovered from losing his wife.
And that just destroys me a little bit.

Hoping and praying that we get a Twilight Sanctorum reference in the Shadowfell arc

One of the things I do for a living is write mysteries. Please believe me when I tell you the feat Emily accomplished with Twilight Sanctorum is remarkable. Mysteries are hard and take planning and for her to so successfully accomplish a mystery story in an improvised medium is amazing.
Twanc is the perfect 1940s hardboiled detective story. Or film noir—the movies based on a lot of hardboiled novels. It includes all the elements you expect. I cannot stop marvelling at what Emily did with her party’s assistance. I just… I think she’s incredible and maybe doesn’t give herself enough credit for what she did.
I’ve written about it before and I keep writing about it because I can’t get over it. I can’t stop thinking about how utterly impressive it is.
