Scurvy on Bones
Scurvy is a disease caused by vitamin C deficiency. Many people know that this disease leads to bleeding gums, loss of teeth, bleeding into the tongue, severe diarrhoea, dizziness, joint inflammation, fatigue and exhaustion and many other symptoms. Scurvy can also be detected in bones, which often helps a victim to prove the disease postmortem, as in the case of the members of the Franklin expedition. Here, too, care must be taken, as other diseases are also associated with the same symbtomatics.
This old jawbone that was buried in Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Belonged to Louis IX, king of France who died besieging Tunis during the Eighth Crusade in 1270, and he had scurvy. (x)
The sections I marked show what scurvy looks like on the bone. You can recognise it by the layers of new bone that grow on the normal bone surface. This bone, however, is not smooth, but normally looks like a sponge with many small holes, it just looks very porous. Especially in the jaw area, the bone recedes and literally breaks away and is no longer able to hold the teeth. But what does scurvy do to the bones?
Example of definite diagnostic scorbutic traits—porotic lesions to the greater wing of the sphenoid (10–11 year old child) (left) and porous bone formation on the posterior surface of the maxillary body (9–10 year old child) (right) Both are from Irland, 19th century (x)
The bones with scurvy lack collagen. The lack of collagen causes tiny blood vessels called capillaries to bleed because they become very weak. The blood signals the bone to heal, so the bone tries to make new bone. This process is similar to what happens when a bone breaks or fractures. However, because this bone lacks collagen, it does not become strong enough and, as mentioned above, looks like a porous sponge. And you can see this particularly well in the typical places like the jaw.
Cibra Orbitala in the eye sockets of an adult (x)
But it can also occur in other parts of the body, for example in the area of the forehead or the eye sockets ( called cibra orbitala, which can also simply occur a severe anaemia or other deficiency disease).
