âOnce we get to Undella Town, we walk along Route 13 until we hit Lacunosa Town. We will stay there for as long as we need to. After poking around Lacunosa, I want to go to the Giant Chasm near Route 13. Maybe even go to the Pokemon League. It depends.â
Kappa was talking and talking in an exhausted yet determined voice. She had waited for months to go on this trip, and now she wasnât going to squander the opportunity. She was going to figure out what happened to her and her trainer, even if it killed her in the end.
Nema, on the other hand, wasnât nearly as gung-ho about the adventure. This whole business surrounding the accident... to her it felt like it should stay buried. In the deepest part of her mind she knew that Kappa wouldnât like the answers she got. Nema feared for the pain that would be brought upon her friend if she found the truth.
It was as if Nema was watching Kappa stare into a deep, dark, endless pit. Standing on the edge, waiting for the moment she could throw herself in.
âWe should go shopping in Nimbasa for food and other things. Lacunosa doesnât have many stores and Undella Towns... everything, is absurdly expensive.â
Kappa knew that Nema was already fully briefed on what the itinerary was, but she felt like she should go over it one more time, if only for herself.
Kappa noticed Nema biting her lip. She looked like she wanted to say something, but it was caught in her throat like an ornery piece of food.
Kappa choked. She downright hated Nemas tone of voice. It irritated her. But, she didnât know why.
âYou mentioned getting on the Super Multi Train to get to Undella, right? Well, you ought to know that that train is a train from Gear Station. Which means...â
The very word rang through Kappaâs head as if her skull was emptied and the word itself was a sharp tool meant to scrape at the insides.
The last time Kappa battled. When was that?
Voices unknown to Kappa tore through her mind like rusty scissors through cardboard. They pleaded with her. Begged at her. Cried for her. âKappa, Kappaâ they howled. Over and over.
âKappa, Kappa, Help us, Kappaâ
Because battle always brought back the voices.
âLook me in the eyes!â
Nema pulled roughly at Kappaâs beard. He pain in her chin was intense enough to to yank her from her thoughts.
Kappa only then realized that she was hyperventilating.
Nema let go of Kappaâs beard at jumped at her face. She swung her tiny arms as best she could around Kappaâs thick neck and whispered.
âIn and out, right? In and out... In... and out...â
Kappa followed Nemaâs instructions carefully. She felt her breathing begin to slow down, and her thundering heart begin to settle.
In that moment, Kappa felt happy that she had Nema to comfort her. In that same moment, she felt just as guilty.
Nema was just a teenager. Barely an adult, and here is Kappa. Having a freakout in the middle of the living room in front of one of the youngest members of the house. What a piss-poor excuse of an adult she was.
âListen. We will figure it out, mâkay? You donât have to battle if you donât wanna. I can battle just fine on my own. But, letâs calm down and take a deep breather before we start wigging out about it, yeah?â
Kappa let out a shaky sigh.
Kappa returned Nemaâs hug.
âIâll be alright. Just... gimme a fuckinâ minute...â
Nema squeezed Kappa. She hated seeing her like this. She hated seeing her trainer like this. Whatever this accident was, it deeply fucked up one too many people, and Nema wished she could just take it away. But, she knew she couldnât, so she tried to be there for Kappa as best she could.
âIâm gonna be okay. ...Donât worry. I did plan for this. We will talk to the others and see who we should take with us.â
