I won't be winning any awards for food photography, and in fact I rarely post pictures of food, but this was so good it took me by surprise. I only recently learned that Turk's Cap flowers and leaves (Malvaviscus arboreus) are edible, not just the ripe fruit. It's too early for fruit, but I nabbed a few flowers and added them to the few elderberries I managed to get to before the wildlife did. Made syrup. Absolutely delicious stirred into homemade vanilla yogurt with a couple of figs. (The figs are *finally* ripening after what seems like an eternity. Yay!) Turk's cap, a close hibiscus relative, is used in spiritual work related to love and beauty. Also known as wax mallow, Mexican apple, bleeding hearts, and red mallow, it's a favorite of hummingbirds and an ingredient in my Chuparosa formula for patient, lasting, affectionate, committed love. Tons of medicinal uses, too. Part of the in-progress Bayou Hoodoo Herbal. Turks Cap Lily, Lillium superbum, is in full bloom here in the Upper Hickory Nut Gorge. These true lilies are native to the eastern and central regions of North America. This particular bunch is growing on a rocky part of the mountain just below my buddies driveway. Many of ghem are up to 8 feet tall. The last two photos i took as i stood under the plants. Butterflys flock to the flowers. These lilies like moist soil and generally grow in shady locations. They are blooming in the forest along the road as i go up to their house. People often confuse tiger lilies, of asian origin; with our native Turks cap lilies. Photo 4 and 5 show how the leaves are arranged on the turks cap lily. A tiger lily has leaves arranged in an alternate pattern along the stem. This is one way to tell the difference between the two. A fellow IG person I follow mentioned deer are eating the turks cap lilies and thus reducing the population in his state. I feel fortunate the deer seem to never touch the lilies here. . . . #lilliumsuperbum #turkscap #turkscaplily #woodland #shadegarden #shadeplants #woodlandplants #lillium #lily #nativewildflowers #nativelily #iloveplants #ilovegardening #ilovewhereilive #wncmountains #blueridgemountains #southernappalachia #upperhickorynutgorge #gertonstrong #gerton (at Gerton, North Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/CR98MN7Lpsz/?utm_medium=tumblr
Post-Op Day 24-yesterday I walked up the stairs without having to stop until i reached the top. AND I was able to walk a timed 15 minutes up and down my driveway!!! YAY YAY YAY!!! This lily is Lilium superbum or Turk's Cap Lily. It grows from 4-8 ft tall and can have from 1 to rarely 100 flowers. Easy to grow in moist partially shaded areas. They spread easily by seed. We have them in abundance and they are a sight to behold when seeing large expanses in full bloom. . . . #lilliumsuperbum #turkscap #turkscaplily #bulb #wildflower #nativewildflowers #wncmountains #nativeplants #woodland #woodlandgarden #shadeplants #shadegarden #wncmountains #blueridgemountains #southernappalachia #upperhickorynutgorge #gertonstrong #gerton #heartsurgery #type1diabetes #t1d #t1diabetes #hearthealth #ornish #heartsurgery #recovery #maker #potterslife (at Gerton, North Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRtjFaLjO7T/?utm_medium=tumblr
