IT'S TSUYU POSTING ON MAIN HOURS i'm so sorry i rambled, but i wanted to share some thoughts on her development below!
so i did actually make a post about it on my personal at one point, but the scene where tsuyu cries at the dorms because of everything that happened with bakugou's kidnapping + rescue attempt is actually really interesting to me. i was confused initially because i've read a few different translations of it that have almost opposite connotations?? the first implying that she regretted the fact that she tried to stop them from saving bakugou, and the other one instead implying she felt bad because she hadn't done enough to stop them.
but the point of this post is that i actually managed to find a comment today that gave me her exact dialogue in japanese, which i'd been wanting to find for ages so that was super cool! obviously i can't... read japanese, lol, so that's not super helpful, but i did try running what she said through a few different translation websites and tried to break down the meaning of each word (who knows if i did so even close to successfully, though, lmao...........)
and now my understanding of the scene is more like. that it's kind of too unclear to tell?? possibly on purpose. specifically, (i think) she says she thought she'd stopped them and was shocked when they still went - and because she thought she'd stopped them, she was filled with unpleasant feelings and a sense of inadequacy. which doesn't really explain what those unpleasant feelings actually were! again, was it that she thought she hadn't done enough to stop them, or that the realization they went anyway made her realize she shouldn't have tried to begin with/they didn't do anything wrong?? those feelings seem contradictory, but...
i'm pretty sure the implication is supposed to be that tsuyu herself doesn't know exactly what she's feeling. she literally says in the same scene that she didn't know what to say to everyone or how to put her feelings in words, so it seems likely to me that she might've even been feeling all those different conflicting emotions and regrets at once?? she doubted herself and didn't know if she should feel bad because she went too far, or didn't go far enough... all she was really sure about was the fact that she didn't want things to change with her classmates/she wanted to be able to talk with them like she did before.
later in season 7, we get tsuyu talking to himiko about how she used to think that breaking the rules was what made someone a villain, but that she's changed her mind since then (or at least she implies she has, lol)! so i do think that in the end, she did end up concluding that her previous mindset was too rigid, and it seems likely again that what happened with bakugou was one of the first moments she started to seriously question her own thinking. but at that time, she hadn't made up her mind yet about what exactly it was she did wrong, whereas by the end of the series she has made up her mind, and since she's supporting ochako with trying to save himiko regardless of "the rules", she probably did end up deciding she regretted what she said to her classmates that day.
this could all be totally off obviously! it's more a personal interpretation and again, since i can't read japanese, if the text leans more towards one interpretation than the other re: tsuyu's regrets at the time, i really don't have any way to tell. BUT i thought i'd share my thoughts anyway because i really enjoy tsuyu's development in mha, even if it's just in the background, and she's a fave of mine too so i'm always looking to get a deeper understanding of her!
