Originally I didn’t like the panel in this scene in the manga where Ayatsuji smiles because it clashes with a line that happens later in the novel; “..and that was the first time I had ever seen him smile at me”.

But now that I think about it, the novel is told almost entirely from Tsujimura’s point of view. The manga is not. “That was the first time I had ever seen him smile at me” does not necessarily mean that it hadn’t happened before, so maybe she wasn’t entirely paying attention during this scene, thus it did not appear during her internal monologue in the novel. Idk
