Silver strap end, Anglo-Saxon Trewhiddle style, 9th century AD. Found in Råde, Østfold 2022
It has a round-eared animal-head terminal and is decorated with interlaced animal ornament. Possibly looted or acquired in Danelaw, before brought to Østfold, partly because the style is most frequently found in those areas. There is only one object registered in Norwegian museums with this style. It is a decoration on a sword from a burial mound on Karmøy in Rogaland. In the British Isles there are many strap ends in this style, but we have not been successful in finding a very good match.
Working on another self-drafted commission project.
A dear friend and mentor asked me if I would make a sampler of the Cornish alphabet for them.
I did some research and found some symbols and images associated with Cornwall.
The first was this brooch found in Trewhiddle, Cornwall, from the 9th Century. Once I saw it I knew I had to try to recreate a part of it.
I think the likeness is very good. I’m excited to see this piece take shape.
Let’s see if I can get it done by St. Piran’s Day.
