"By the time Gansey has found the pile of cable knit blankets tucked away in an upstairs closet, the living room has gone silent. He pulls out the biggest blanket he can see and goes back downstairs... and smiles at the sight of Adam and Ronan, fast asleep and tucked together on the couch. Even Chainsaw slept, snoring softly on the back cushions. Quietly, Gansey joins them, tucking the blanket around their sleeping bodies and giving Ronan a soft kiss on the forehead."
I think I was the only person to draw something for the @trcholidayexchange, but I can't complain! I painted this for avalonjoan, who requested "some sweet wintry caretaking or cuddling at the Barns or Monmouth" and that they love forehead kisses. This was super fun to make for them â„
the devilâs playthings (idle hands and all that)
A little bronan (with a dash of pynch at the end) for the lovely rowan_wood on ao3, for the @trcholidayexchange.Â

Before Gansey and Adam had left for DC, they had left specific instructions.
Water Ganseyâs mint plant.
Eat real food.
Donât do anything illegal.
âIt seems a little hypocritical of Gansey of all people to judge our eating habits, donât you think?â Blue says around a spoon. This may be her fourth cup of yogurt, but sheâs had other food too! Maybe not today, but definitely recently.
âWhat the fuck does he know, he puts avocado and pineapple on the same pizza,â Ronan agrees from his place in front of Monmouthâs âstoveâ (a barely-working hot plate). He looks a little bit like a witch, dressed in all black with a raven sitting on his shoulder as he stirs a giant pot ofâ
âWhat is it youâre making again?â Blue asks.
âHot dog soup.â
âAh, yes. That.â
Blue reconsiders her previous position momentarily. Maybe Gansey wasnât wrong to set some ground rules.
The other two instructions were pretty self-explanatory. Gansey loved his mint plant almost more than he loved Blue (sometimes Blue even questioned their ranking) so keeping it alive was a priority. And avoiding crime seemed to be something Gansey was also fixated on, seeing as his and Adamâs last trip to DC had left a flaming Camaro and half-dead Ronan in their wake. Ronan wasnât that person anymore, but ever since Ganseyâs second death, something about Ronan has always felt a little more raw, a little bit more fragile. Something small could tip the scales inside of him keeping him balanced, so outlawing crime was a cautionary measure that was as necessary as it was futile.
Itâs very possible that leaving Blue with Ronan was a safety measure in and of itself. It was a solid plan on their part, seeing as Blue was the most sensible of the group and therefore the most likely to keep Ronan in check.
Or at least, she would be, if they werenât such bad influences on each other.
âI wanna do something,â she said says suddenly from her perch on the counter beside Ronan. âSomething Adam and Gansey wouldnât approve of.â
Ronan perks up so suddenly Chainsaw loses balance on his shoulder, flapping wildly and gliding into the corner of the kitchen/bathroom/laundry and glaring bitterly from the floor. Ronanâs eyes are practically sparkling.
âSargent, Iâve been waiting a lifetime for you to say those words to me.â
âYouâve only known me for a year and a half.â
Ronan waves away the technicalities, still looking more excited than sheâs ever seen him in her life.
âBut it canât be illegal.â
Ronan deflates.
âCâmon, Ronan. The list!â she points to the Rule of Law, written in Adamâs messy hand and fastened to the fridge with a magnet.
âI thought we were ignoring the list! Iâm making Campbellâs soup with hot dogs right now!â Ronan said, flailing his ladle and splashing broth. âI donât know how to tell you this, but itâs not actually an Irish delicacy.â
Blue rolls her eyes. âThereâs gotta be something youâve always wanted to do that Adam has said no to,â she implores. Sheâs not sure how she likes how sheâs phrased it, somehow implying that Adam Parrish is some sort of warden for Ronanâs fun. Sheâs sure heâs allowed to do whatever he wants, but thereâs probably somethingâ
âHe never lets me spend my money on him.â
That reply was absurdly fast.
âPardon?â
âYou heard me,â Ronan says with a scoff as he turns off the hot plate for his horrible food. âYou know how he is. I have a shit-ton of money and he never lets me spend it on fun things, especially things I think heâll like.â
âO-kay,â she says slowly. This is not really where she thought they were going in terms of Illicit Activities this weekend, but sheâll allow it. Itâs better than staying in Monmouth all weekend babysitting each other. And itâs not a crime. âSo you want to go buy stuff for Adam?â
âI just said he wonât allow it, dipshit.â
âThen why did you bring it up!â
Ronan looks deep into her eyes. The sparkle from before is gone, but thereâs a kind of vengeful glee behind them that looks much more Ronan anyway.
âThereâs no rule saying I canât spend money on you.â
Now the vengeful glee is in both of their eyes.
They leave a bowl of soup on the floor for Chainsaw, and within minutes theyâre on their way to the local craft store.
----
The Michaels parking lot is nearly empty, which is fine for Blue because it means no line, but probably less fun for Ronan who has no one to intimidate.
âYou can hold my stuff for me,â Blue says cheerily.
Ronan looks wary, but this was his idea, so instead of backing out he reaches into his wallet. He extends his credit card to her between two fingers.
Blue looks at the card and laughs. âIs everything you own black?â
Before she can take the slick black card from his hand, Ronan pulls it back just out of her reach.
âThis card is for selfish gain only. No buying for other people and noâI donât know, philanthropic shit. Only irresponsible purchases or I take it back.â
Blue realizes that this feels hypocritical. She thinks of all the lavish things that Gansey could have bought for her had her principles not eroded his will to ask. She understands that Adamâs pride is only a more saturated version of her own in some respects, especially when it comes to money. Less than a year ago she never would have encouraged this: reckless spending of otherâs money on her behalf. She had principles too, after all!
But. Seeing Ronan happy weirdly made her happy too. Another thing Blue wouldnât have thought possible only a year ago.
She has an image to uphold, though, so she rolls her eyes. âFine, fine. Are you going to make me solemnly swear that I am up to no good?â
âWhat?â
âJust give me the card.â
----
âReal talk, what do you even use all this yarn for?â Ronan asks. Heâs been given the precious task of holding most of Blueâs haul, so approximately three hundred bags of crafting materials are buckling his knees a bit as he walks to the BMW. Blue, on the other hand, is holding two bags.
âIâve been crocheting tiny little outfits for Chainsaw for months, now,â Blue says with a shrug. âYouâll see them when winter comes. Itâs too warm for them right now.â
Ronan does not respond to this, probably because he canât tell if sheâs being serious or not. (She is.)
âIâm also pretty good at knitting fingerless gloves,â she says with pride, opening the trunk for Ronan.
âWhy not ones with fingers?â he asks with a twist of his mouth.
Blue puffs out her chest. âFingerless looks cooler.â
Ronan stares for a beat. Then another.
Blue sighs. âFine, real gloves are harder to knit. Happy?â
And weirdly, Ronan is. His pale blue eyes are lighting up again, in that gleeful way that means heâs thinking of crimes to commit.
âI have another idea.â
----
Theyâre back at Monmouth, and for reasons Blue cannot fathom Ronan is taking one of her pairs of knitted gloves from Ganseyâs desk and walking with purpose to his old bedroom.
âIf youâre secretly a seamstress Iâm going to lose my mind,â Blue says as she follows him, trying to figure out what this plan of his could be. She only gets more confused when he pulls out an umpireâs mask from under his bed, and a what appears to be a goalieâs hockey stick.
Blue looks at him, puzzled. âI thought you played tennis.â
Ronan extends the sports gear towards her. âTheyâre for you.â
In her confusion, Blue actually finds herself accepting his offerings in her hands, not understanding until she sees Ronan lying down on his old bed, her shimmery purple knitted glove lying on his chest.
âYouâre dreaming?â
Ronan levels his gaze at her. âYou better put your gear on, you get to squash anything extra I bring back.â
This definitely should have been on The List. Why wasnât it on the list? What is he even dreaming for?
Blue doesnât even get the chance to ask. Ronanâs already asleep, breath coming out even and slow.
âJesus Christ, Ronan,â Blue says, scurrying to slip the mask onto her face and adjust the straps. Itâs when she finally figures out how to fasten the thing to fit her head that she notices the gloves lying on Ronanâs chest have knitted fingers now, and Ronan is lying much more still than he was just a few minutes ago.
After a few moments of pregnant silence, Blue gripping the handle of the hockey stick vigilantly, Ronan awakens, sitting up and smiling victoriously and holding out a glove for Blue.
âTry it on.â
She slips her hands in, feeling lumpy spot in the palm where she missed a stitch. Itâs still the glove from before, just with knitted fingers that perfectly fit her small hands. It takes a second for Blue to realize it, but after a second she asks:
âAre these generating heat?â
Ronan grins again, pleased with himself.
Blue looks down at herself. âWhat was the point of me putting all this stuff on?â
Ronan hums. âMostly to make you look dumb.â
âRonan!â
âIt was also a precautionary measure.â
Blue glares, not fully buying it.
âWell, what do you think?â
Blue looks at her gloved hand, feeling the gentle pulse of heat warm her fingertips and knuckles, and admits that itâs a pretty damn impressive. She thinks of the bags and bags of yarn dumped on the pool table, and gets an idea of her own.
---
Gansey and Adam return the following day, exhaustion set deep in their bones after a weekend of political showboating.
âDo you think theyâre okay?â Gansey asks Adam as they climb the dusty stairs to the second floor of Monmouth.
Adam canât help the dubious expression on his face. âThey probably would have called if something bad happened, right?â
Now they both look dubious.
Gansey reaches for the doorknob with an air of confidence neither of them really has, squaring his shoulders briefly before jimmying the handle and opening the door quickly, like ripping off a band-aid.
The scene they are greeted with is unexpected, to say the least.
Thereâs gloves everywhere. At least twenty pairs, strewn across the pool table, littering the floor, hanging off the edge of the leather couchâthe leather couch where their significant others happen to be laying down, Blue on one end with her socked feet in Ronanâs lap, and Ronan with his legs kicked up on the coffee table before him. Blue is holding a plastic contraption with tiny pegs in her hand that contains about three-fourths of a glove, and Ronan is holding a bowl of unidentifiable food, extending a ladle towards Blueâs face and earnestly trying to get her to eat it.
âI told you! I am not trying your death soup!â
âHow do you know itâs bad if you havenât tried it?â
Beside Adam, Gansey clears his throat delicately.
Blue and Ronan glace over the back of the couch.
âHey! Youâre back!â Blue says sunnily.
Adam looks at the room skeptically. âDo we even bother asking?â
Blue and Ronan beam at him and answer simultaneously.
âNo!â
Adam would have accepted that, but Gansey, being more inquisitive by nature, presses on.
âGloves? You know itâs September, right?â
Ronan scowls. âIs this how you react to our collaborative crafting efforts, Dick? I expected better from you.â
Blueâs petulant frown matches Ronanâs, and thatâs how Adam knows that theyâve allowed those two to spend far too much time together and itâs best to separate them immediately. Adam reaches over Ronanâs shoulder and grabs the bowl from his hands and takes it to the kitchen/bathroom/laundry, knowing that soon after Ronan will follow. He makes it to the sink before he feels Ronan pressing against his back and placing a kiss on his shoulder.
âMiss me?â Adam asks, turning to accept Ronanâs affection fully. Ronan Lynch, terror of Aglionby Academy and dreamer of treasures and horrors alike, is a cuddle whore in ways Adam would have never believed a year ago. Ronan nuzzles his face into the crook of Adamâs neck and hums.
Adam wraps his arms loosely around the small of Ronanâs back and they stay like that for a while, until Adam finally asks. âSo how was your weekend with Blue?â
âProductive,â Ronan says. Adam can hear the smirk in his voice and isnât sure how he feels about it.
Ronan disentangles himself from Adam without warning, striding from the kitchen portion of the room to the laundry machines.
âGot you a present.â Adam bristles a little, before Ronan amends, âMade you a present.â
Ronan grabs something from atop the washing machine and launches it at Adam, who curses and barely manages to catch it.
A pair of gloves. Adam isnât sure why he expected anything else. Theyâre hand-knitted, clearly, the cuff and palm made of a few different types of yarn in various shades of green, almost making it look like interwoven vines. The moss-colored fingers themselves look different, the stitch much tighter and the texture feeling almost velvety. He flips the gloves over and back a couple times, but finds no seams.
âWell, try âem on, Parrish. We donât have all day.â
Adam tries not to look skeptical as he slips his fingers inside, tugging the cuff of the glove with his other hand until his fingers are touching the tips of the glove. A perfect fit.
âTheyâre niceââ Adam starts placating but stops when he feels a warmth radiate from tips of his fingers down to his palms. That, and something else. Thereâs pressure on the sides of each of his fingers, almost as if the empty spaces between them were occupied. Like someone else was squeezing his hand.
Adam looks up, seeing Ronanâs own hands clad in gloves he didnât see him put on. Black, but with an iridescent oil-slick shimmer to them. Ronanâs fingers push together for a moment and release, and Adamâs own hand feels the squeeze.
âFor when weâre apart,â Ronan says with a shrug. Acting nonchalant when heâs feeling something big, another Ronan Lynch staple.
Adam grips Ronanâs hand, even though theyâre ten feet apart, and smiles. âI love them.â
Ronan smiles back, an open and honest expression that only makes an appearance on the rarest of occasions. Adam only gets to marvel at his boyfriendâs happiness for a moment before he hears:
âThere is NO WAY Iâm letting you two start a magical Etsy store. Thatâs a terrible idea and a threat to your safety.â
âIâm just saying, I think Ronan and I could make a killing with our product. They look so good on you!â
Adam perks up a moment and looks at Ronan. âHey, speaking of killing.â
Ronan looks at him curiously.
âDid you water Ganseyâs mint plant?â
Adam watches Ronanâs eyes practically bug out of his face. He shakes his head as he watches Ronan run frantically from the kitchen/bathroom/laundry. Was there even a point to that list?
