It’s not a dumb question at all! You are correct on both counts. 

Headcanon ahoy: Daud and the Whalers transverse solely by imagining themselves in the destination of their choosing, which is why seeing their destination makes transversal harder. The visual input reinforces the sense of where they immediately are and keeps them from putting themselves in whatever place they need or want to be. Corvo, who transverses along a line of sight, has to pick a location and think there.

Also unlike Corvo, who “rushes” across physical space to reach his target point, Daud and the Whalers do a Nightcrawler-esque thing where they pop into an alternate dimension and pop back out at their destination. This, more than anything else, is why regular people find them so scary.

Because the alternate dimension they travel through is the Void. The light from their lenses crept there from shrine lamps that fell into the Outsider’s realm. The whispers that they hear whenever they transverse are the notes of cradle songs gnawed by teeth. The black smoke around them when they vanish and reappear is the shadow of the Outsider’s hands following them out.

They don’t know it or realize it, because Daud’s power flows through all of them in one form or another, and this ignorance is his power at its most basic. And so every Whaler wonders how the common folk are that terrified. How they themselves were once so scared of Daud’s men.

Those among them willing to entertain madness think of things more unsettling. Why every witness whispers of lights in their lenses. Why guards within earshot flinch as if in terror at a transversal. But none of the Whalers ever think that there is something they don’t hear or see. Never once does it cross their minds: they don’t hear the echoes that follow them from the Void. They don’t hear the crumbling of bones. They don’t see the pale hands that sometimes reach through the smoke, fingers curved for their hearts.  

They do not know, and they never do.

The Outsider takes for all things he gives.

A transversal is a line that intersects one or more other lines in a plane. In this tutorial we will pay particular attention to the angles formed when a transversal intersects a pair of parallel lines. Notice the eight angles that are formed.

In this figure there are four acute angles numbered 2, 3, 6, and 7, and there are four obtuse angles numbered 1, 4, 5, and 8. All of the acute angles have the same measures, and all of the obtuse angles have the same measure.

Using the figure above, 2 is 105°. Find 1's measures and 5's.

Each acute angle is a supplement of an obtuse angle, so the measure for 1 is

180 = 105 = 75

Answer for 1: 75°

1 and 5 are corresponding angles, so they both have the same measure.

Answer for 5: 105°

When a transversal intersects a pair of lines, special pairs of angles are formed. In the figure above, 1 and 5 are corresponding angles because the position of 5 corresponds to the position of 1. Other pairs of corresponding angles are 3 and 7; 2 and 6; 4 and 8.

Angle 1 and angle 8 also form a special pair of angles. They are on alternate sides of the transversal and are outside of (not between) the parallel lines. So 1 and 8 are called alternate exterior angles. Angle 2 and angle 7 are another pair of alternate exterior angles.

Angle 4 and 5 are alternate interior angles because they are on alternate sides of the transversal and in the interior of (between) the parallel lines. Angle 3 and 6 are are another pair of alternate interior angles.

Name four pairs of corresponding angles.

Answer: <1 and <5, <3 and <7, <2 and <6, <4 and <8

Name two pairs of alternate exterior angles.
