Transversals
A transversal is a line that intersects one or more other lines in a plane. In this tutorial we will pay particular attention to the angles formed when a transversal intersects a pair of parallel lines. Notice the eight angles that are formed.
In this figure there are four acute angles numbered 2, 3, 6, and 7, and there are four obtuse angles numbered 1, 4, 5, and 8. All of the acute angles have the same measures, and all of the obtuse angles have the same measure.
Using the figure above, 2 is 105°. Find 1's measures and 5's.
Each acute angle is a supplement of an obtuse angle, so the measure for 1 is
180 = 105 = 75
Answer for 1: 75°
1 and 5 are corresponding angles, so they both have the same measure.
Answer for 5: 105°
When a transversal intersects a pair of lines, special pairs of angles are formed. In the figure above, 1 and 5 are corresponding angles because the position of 5 corresponds to the position of 1. Other pairs of corresponding angles are 3 and 7; 2 and 6; 4 and 8.
Angle 1 and angle 8 also form a special pair of angles. They are on alternate sides of the transversal and are outside of (not between) the parallel lines. So 1 and 8 are called alternate exterior angles. Angle 2 and angle 7 are another pair of alternate exterior angles.
Angle 4 and 5 are alternate interior angles because they are on alternate sides of the transversal and in the interior of (between) the parallel lines. Angle 3 and 6 are are another pair of alternate interior angles.
Name four pairs of corresponding angles.
Answer: <1 and <5, <3 and <7, <2 and <6, <4 and <8
Name two pairs of alternate exterior angles.
Answer: <2 and <7, <1 and <8
