After nearly 20 years on Das Erste: Farewell to Verbotene Liebe
ARD's programming committee has decided to end the current production contract for Verbotene Liebe. The last episode of the show as a daily soap is expected to be broadcast early in 2015. The successor to the 6PM broadcasting timeslot will be Quizduell with Jörg Pilawa.
Volker Herres, Das Erste Program Director:
"20 years ago, the brother-sister pair Jan and Julia made Verbotene Liebe a German hit series. Who could have guessed back then that VL, as the glamor soap was quickly nicknamed, would have such a long run? But at a certain point all the many kinds of stories of the forbidden and glamorous get told. Then it's necessary to find the right time to stop. And in our opinion that time has come. As painful as that may be for loyal fans of the series. But one thing is for sure: Verbotene Liebe wrote television history."
Frank Beckmann, ARD Early Evening Coordinator:
"With great dedication and impressive creativity, the Verbotene Liebe team has shaped the early evening for years. We know the strength of the brand and its importance to its loyal fans. That's why we're considering whether we can offer Verbotene Liebe in another form at a later date."
The successor to the 6PM broadcast timeslot will be Quizduell with Jörg Pilawa. The interactive show achieved above-average ratings in May during a three-week test broadcast.
Since 2 January 1995 Verbotene Liebe has been running from Monday to Friday in Das Erste's early evening programming. The daily soap is produced by UFA Serial Drama on the backlot at Ossendorf in Cologne.
During the current year up to 11 July, Verbotene Liebe reached an average of 1.22 million viewers, representing a market share of 6.8 percent.
