Doctor Who: The Visitation
With an extremely busy work schedule with everything going on I thought Iâd take my mind off real-life by watching some classic Doctor Who. This time, I picked a random Season 19 story. Perhaps The Visitation wasnât the best choice? Regardless, once again with a three companion TARDIS Team, two of the companions are given perhaps slightly less to do, with Tegan and Adric being captured and controlled at times through the plot. Meanwhile, the clear winner for Most Valuable Companion goes to Nyssa for (of all things) spending most of her screen time in the TARDIS! There she throws together a device to stop the android disguised as Death incarnate, lures and destroys it and seemingly saves Adric in the process. Honestly, if Richard Mace had stayed on as a companion, Nyssa might have had come competition!Â

Just Sew January Day 20: Mackintosh (not the apple) . I only make something new for the Chicago TARDIS masquerade every few years, but the 50th anniversary in 2013 called for something special, and I knew it was time to realize my "someday" plan of Kassia and Tremas from "The Keeper of Traken." Nyssa remains my favorite classic companion, and the production design for her homeworld stands out next to pretty much anything the BBC has done before or since. . I read up on the production background and watched the excellent featurettes on the DVD, and wasn't surprised to learn the main inspiration came from Art Nouveau. I don't know if/how much they looked to Charles Rennie Mackintosh specifically, but to my eye the overlapping shapes and lines strongly echo his work, like the wall panel from the Willow Tea Rooms in Glasgow (2nd to last photo). . We met this lovely Nyssa backstage at the masquerade, and I had fun geeking out with her about the research and construction, and finding that we had independently arrived at similar approaches to the applique work. And we rarely do photo ops with con guests, but couldn't pass up the opportunity for a family portrait (because the Doctor is certainly part of Nyssa's family!) with Peter Davison and Sarah Sutton, whose delighted exclamation of "It's my parents!" was worth the price and wait all by itself. đ . #justsewjan #doctorwhocosplay #traken #nyssa #sarahsutton #peterdavison

I did take one liberty with their fancy dress costumes - instead of white stockings and court shoes, giving them open-toed dance sandals (much more common nowadays for ballroom dancing). Sandals weren't really a popular style of footwear as far back as the 1920s. xD
Doctor Who: âKeeper of Trakenâ Gardens & Architecture
The sets for Traken were absolutely gorgeous (for a TV show filmed in 1980). The gray computers in Nyssa and Tremasâ house (the room with the rectangular door ornamented with large inner and outer frames of amazing scrollwork) look dated now. On the other hand, Traken was a very retro advanced civilization that couldnât seem to decide whether it was Elizabethan, faerie, or So Incredibly Advanced Itâs Steampunk Vulcan.
I wish we couldâve seen what the gardens on Traken were like when there wasnât a malevolent lawn ornament causing weeds to grow and the gardeners to avoid its vicinity. Nyssa recalls groves of trees and scented flowers, harvest festivals and fruits (purple and red!) in the audios. On the other hand, even without Melkur tainting the grove, I suspect the Fosters allowed a certain amount of wildnessâ ivy spilling everywhere, moss and lichens on old stone and trees allowed to have dead or wizened branches as long as they werenât liable to come down and hurt anyone.
