Even with a injured neck i can still train. The trick is to have training partners that you can trust not to hurt you. For that to happen you have to be safe yourself and you have to be on the look out and pick them out from the beginners and the crazies 😂. At 42 i take zero chances, once i ID someone as dangerous, it's done, no more sparring with that individual. Accidents and injuries are part of sport so it's vital to mitigate the risk of injuries as much as possible. In regards to getting in shape, make sure you get one that won't make you do dangerous things. You don't need crazy types of workouts to get fit and healthy. Keep it simple, keep it effective, and keep it fun.
