toyan toyan… listen whip the wimp girl was THE anhane event and I would never take that away from them but I also love what it did for toyan’s dynamic. I like toyan a lot firstly bc of how opposite their personalities are: an being the most extroverted extrovert to ever extrovert and having a supportive family that taught her to love music and live so carefree while toya is #bad-at-social-cues and very reserved and loves music but more as a rebellion against his father. And I adored the idea of an breaking toya out of his shell and helping him live more freely, but then wtwg shows toya as the one reaching out to an, hoping to ease her worries. by relating to her. And I think that’s so sweet!! They’re so similar in that they have partners who shine so brightly that they feel inadequate. they’re good but they’re kinda stuck in their ways and not able to grow and climb like akito and kohane are. by which i mean an hadn't been challenged until she met kohane so she had no motivation to improve, and toya had become complacent/frustrated with music then just went along with akito until the end of the main story, so both ended up being late learners in a way. they're bad at feelings, relatively sheltered, they love strongly and are afraid of being left behind or letting people down. They feel like they’re not doing enough to support their partner, they feel disposable, they feel their partner could never care about them as much as they care about their partner. Toya just happens to come to this conclusion earlier and his response is to run away, and it’s so sweet of him to reach out to an and stop her from making the same mistakes. I feel it’s easier to draw comparisons between an and akito/toya and kohane but antoya are so important to each other’s development. also I’ve noticed a trend that toya is there/has a four star for all of an’s saddest events (bout for beside you, light up the fire, whip the wimp girl) and an is there/has a four star for all of toya’s happiest events (same dreams same colors, the first concerto, that beautiful sound/blue whale orchestra, go all out, and bonus an ode for the pure of heart). with the exception of nocturne interlude (rad dogs) and competitive fire (accelerate). which I think is both reflective of an being able to confide in anyone BUT kohane bc she didn’t want to shatter the other girl’s image of her and also toya wanting to genuinely support an bc she was there for him at his low point and helped bring out his smile :). and that’s why he gets a feature during the first focus where she’s smiling in her untrained ToT but they’re genuinely very important!!!! and an's always supportive of him, not always in a loud way which you wouldn't expect from her, but when he's pushing himself or going through something new she's there. an helped toya smile and was someone he could lean on while he helped her not make his mistakes and do some self-reflection (and we can’t forget akito’s help he bullied an into being honest with herself first. and ofc kohane's the one who inspired toya to acknowledge his genuine passion for music and sing with them again. in conclusion they all matter so much to each other).
