Which is ironic, to me, because its supposed to be a nice change of pace, a "breather," if you will, for the characters, and it also serves as such for the avid Niigo reader waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Random spoiler thoughts under the cut (not that this beach episode event actually spoils anything but it's the principal of the thing.)

VINES clearly represent mafumom's influence over kanade, being seemingly all-encompassing and restricting her hands (actions) and killing her slowly by choking her.

though kanade's hands are reaching up to the vines around her neck, she isn't attempting to pull them off, and is letting what oxygen remains leave in the form of bubbles, representing her giving up and surrendering herself to the manipulation.

the smile on her face obviously parallels the one she has in the untrained, and her eyes (the windows to the soul) are covered, representing the insincere mask of Goodness she's wearing as well as mafumom obscuring her perception of the truth with her lies. however, the tears streaking past the covering are clearly visible and represent kanade's horrific agony seeping through the cracks of the facade.

the ribbons in her outfit wrapping around the apple show that she's clutching the parental love mafumom offers close to herself despite it being poisoned as fuck.

the beautiful gown and the crown are there to create an image of perfect beauty and unattainability, emphasised by the glass pane covering the card. kanade is entirely unreachable; she's on a completely different level of existance to the rest of n25.

the purple creature in the back represents mafumom (obviously) and it envelops the card (and kanade) entirely, sealing off any hope of escape

red is used sparsely, being seen in the apple, in the ribbon in kanade's hair, in the sliver of background, and in mafumomster's eye. it represents that poisonous, manipulative form of love trapping kanade in the relationship, being seen in the love offered, in the augmentations made to her appearance in the name of Beterring Her, and in the way mafumom sees her.

also, kanade's skin is purposefully rendered to have a purplish, bruised look. this represents how she's practically rotting from the inside out despite the smile, as well as calling attention to how the restraints dig painfully into her skin.
