Touch typing is a precious life skill and once learned undoubtably makes the most significant time saving contribution, whilst sitting at a keyboard or computer. Teaching keyboarding skills should start at primary school. The younger a child is taught, the easier it is for them to learn, gaining an invaluable skill which will help them excel in their chosen career path.
Why the QWERTY Keyboard is the Most Famous Among all Layouts?
Although keyboards are available in many different layouts and styles, the QWERTY keyboard has always been the most popular. Even 150 years since its invention, people still prefer to use it over other more researched and scientifically proven, better layouts. From renowned novel writers to the digital and tech-savvy, the QWERTY keyboard has prevailed. But why has this keyboard stayed the test of time with popularity still sky-high?
What Makes QWERTY Keyboards the More Preferable Option?
Christopher Latham Sholes invented the QWERTY keyboard to place the commonly used letters ‘th’, ‘re’ and ‘st’ at a distance from each other. Many people believe that the QWERTY keyboard was created to slow down the typist. But, in reality, it was created after consultation with typists to determine the right placement of alphabets on a keyboard. This helps people to type fast using both hands.Â
QWERTY keyboards help typists find sequences that ultimately lead to faster touch typing. The keyboard layout became famous in 1878 and although many keyboards claim to provide faster typing, none of them have quite made an impact like the QWERTY layout.Â
The DVORAK keyboard was invented in the year 1936 by Augustus Dvorak. The most crucial feature of this keyboard was that the most used letters were in ‘home’ rows. He claimed that his creation would decrease a finger’s movement as compared to a QWERTY keyboard. Although the DVORAK keyboard became popular it couldn’t surpass the popularity of the QWERTY layout.Â
The consistent demand for QWERTY keyboards reflects its popularity and longevity. It cannot be concluded if it is the fastest-typing keyboard available on the market but it is undoubtedly easy to use and has made typing tasks significantly easier. All we can say for sure is that the QWERTY keyboard is here to stay.
