a commentary on food wars (shokugeki no soma) so far [s1-3] :
yes. i was one of those people who started watching food wars as a joke because i saw someone making fun of it on instagram reels. and i was intrigued.
however, i became obsessed. so obsessed that i literally watched 3 seasons of it during christmas break.
once you get past the orgasming to the food and actually pay attention to the plot, the show is really good. here are some things that honestly drew my interest into the show:
- soma. he’s honestly just a really likeable character and i’m always rooting for him. however, i like how the writers don’t let him get everything so easily, and he doesn’t always win. i was honestly shocked when he lost to akira in the fall selection, but i’m glad that he did because it allowed for some character development within both fingers.
-meat meat. she’s honestly my favorite side character and i love how she’s smart yet hot and she’s also in love w soma. tbh i ship it the most after soma and erina.
- erina nakiri. the genius of the god tongue. what else can i say? also, i’m literally OBSESSED with the enemies/lovers trope that’s being depicted here between her and soma. and i love the connection she has to joichiro. its so adorable.
- joichiro saiba. one hot ass mf. dilf energy all the way. esp in the flashback scenes to when he attended totsuki.
- ISSHIKI!!!! comfort character alert. besides the times when he’s not wearing clothes, he’s one of the best side characters within the show.
okay now on to the parts that are mehhhhh:
- the animation. since it’s not really a fighting-anime nor is it a romance, it feels like the show is mostly animated using panning of images. it’s mainly just the characters speaking to each other or going through some erotic scene. i feel like they could have taken the opportunity with the food fantasy scenes and given us a bit more in terms of animation, because i really feel like its lacking in this aspect.
- the plot gets a little repetitive at times. yes, i know the name of the show is called “food wars,” but i think some of the best episodes of the show have been when they weren’t having food wars or competitions. for example, the training camp from hell arc was pretty good imo, as well as the first-years exams at the end of season 3. i also enjoyed the arc where the students were sent to work at a restaurant and soma works under kojiro in the new french restaurant in japan. i honestly wasn’t really into the whole fall selection arc of the show, except for the part where soma was up against the copycat chef, bc there were some intense scenes between soma and meat meat <3.
- time to address the elephant in the room: the erotic scenes. it’s honestly not necessary and if feel like the creators of the show put it in there just to fit in with the other anime and hentai stereotypes. like, it’s not necessary. if people really just wanted to watch the show for that point, then they would honestly just watch fucking hentai at that point. i’d rather have the time and animation spent on other parts of the show.
so these are basically my thoughts on food wars so far. not sure if i’m going to continue on to season 4 and 5, but we’ll see. i’m trying to watch other anime rn. lmk if u have any suggestions too!
