I had someone ask a question recently about Scott being top/dominant and if that’s within his character and I wanted to answer in a slightly longer post so…
First off, I feel obligated to say a few things:
- Top and dom isn’t the same thing, the idea of Scott being in one sexual position or another (or if he has a preference or no preference) actually says nothing about who he is as a character. So making a character top or bottom in any scene (or in all scenes) isn’t “ooc” in itself.
- Preference for who is top/bottom in smut is more reader/writer preference than anything else.
About writing dominant Scott:
Scott doesn’t submit to anyone in the show. He’s not forceful or aggressive to others, but he absolutely refuses to submit to other people’s will.
He gives not an inch to people that want to dominate and control him (i.e. Derek, Peter, Chris, Deucalion, etc.).
Now I’m not saying that the world is broken up into dom/sub/switch (many sexual relationships are devoid of these rigid definitions) but I am saying that the case for sub!scott would require just as much convincing (if not more) than a dom!scott does.
Just because Scott is loving, kind, and respectful of others - that doesn’t make him submissive.
Likewise, dominant doesn’t mean being abusive, demeaning, etc.
Scott wouldn’t dominate someone against their will, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t take a dominant/active role in a sexual situation, especially if that’s what his partner wanted.
Scott also has a warm, playful and giving nature. Seeing him as a playful/loving dom isn’t a stretch at all. The wants of his partner would also likely influence what he wants to give them.
Scott is a leader and a mentor. He has a deep strength and provides guidance and direction to many characters in the show.
If you look at nearly all of Scott and Liam’s interactions in the show, you will see Scott being loving and dominant.
All of that being said, there are also ways that writers can write a more aggressive Scott:
Scott is a werewolf, we see him struggle in early seasons with controlling the animalistic aspects of werewolf nature. In later seasons we see him gain greater control of this - but the fear of becoming an aggressive beast is still something that Scott struggles with as late as season 4.
Therefore, it’s not wildly out of character to build on the idea that Scott actually has aggressive/dominating urges but that he suppresses them.
That he is constantly holding himself back.
In the hands of a good fic writer, that suppression equates to a strong building tension looking for release. There’s great opportunity to tempt him to break from his control (with a willing partner) even if it’s just for a little while.
This isn’t reinventing Scott’s character, it’s approaching him from a different angle - reading into small details, exaggerating them, and expressing them in a sexual manner.
Whenever a fic writer sits down to write Scott (or any other character), they have to make creative choices about what aspects they want to dig into and portray. This is one of those examples.
Then there’s the third way people do this:
When it comes to PWP smut (no pun intended) sometimes people are more into the dynamics that a character has with others and their role within a story than they are into seeing a deep and accurate character portrayal.
Although that’s not usually how I personally approach writing my own fics, I can enjoy other’s writing in this regard. Scott has a lot of power in the show, he’s an alpha werewolf, he’s the leader, the mentor, etc. That creates opportunity for kinky situations that many people enjoy.
They’re not sitting around claiming to be a strictly canon interpretation of how these characters behave, they’re basically creating a sex parody of the character’s role within the show.
But bottom line: if Theo wants Scott to rail him, it wouldn’t be ooc for Scott to give him what he wants. xP
