"Do you know why Eloise and Penelope are not friends anymore ?" Maybe Colin shouldn't ask this question to his mother, maybe she doesn't even know, but he just can't help himself. It feels wrong to see his sister with Cressida of all the people, just like he hates seeing Penelope alone or with eligible suitors like Lord Debling, especially now that she asked him for some distance after that kiss. Colin only left Mayfair for a few months, but these months made him feel incredibly lonely. No one replied to his letters, not even Penelope. And it seems that things are getting worse with each passing day.
He shrugs, trying quite badly to not make a big deal of this. "I'm just... surprised, I suppose. They were always together." Colin looks away, knowing he shouldn't justify his question. He's scared his inner thoughts are written all over his face. His mother might be too good at reading him. He doesn't want to risk anything.
