Chromoplastic Mural (2011)
Bass Wood and Acrylic Paint
Luis Tomasello
This beautiful relief piece consists of 672 white geometric forms placed in a repetitive pattern to create a grid with equally proportioned spaces between the forms. The fluorescent orange plane of each angled shape reflects off the surface of the white wall, producing a glowing atmosphere of colored light. It is ethereal in person, it truly seems as though there are LED lights of sorts hidden somewhere in the piece– totally incredible what color, space, natural light and shadows can do to our naked eye. Tomasello is primarily associated with Kinetic Art, a 1960′s movement prevalent in Paris. Kinetic Art refers to work that moves or gives the sensation of movement through optical effects.
“The shape gives rise to the color, which is transformed from vision into sensation; it is projected into space, where it tints the atmosphere, and becomes iridescent on touching the plane.”
-Luis Tomasello
