James Martin was a Jewish boy born in Tocumwal, New South Wales, Australia in 1901. His family had moved to Australia from New Zealand during the gold rush of the 1850′s and changed their last name to Martin to avoid antisemitism. At the outbreak of World War I, he lied about his age and enlisted in the army. When he enlisted on April 12, 1915, he was 14 years old and 3 months, making him possibly the youngest soldier to serve in the Australian military.
During the Gallipoli campaign against Ottoman forces, Private James Martin served in the trenches near Courtney's Post. When the cold winter weather arrived in Gallipoli, the unsanitary conditions in the trenches caused James Martin to catch typhoid fever, causing his death at the age of 14 and 9 months. He is the youngest soldier to have perished in the service of the Australian Army and one of the estimated 13% of Australia’s Jewish community that served in the ANZAC forces during World War I.
