if BirchSpark is still going to have a mate what if they have kits at the same time KoiKit is born?
Birchspark: look, he's not my son. I'm not related to him at all. But if you're going to call me anything, can it at least be 'Uncle'? That makes more sense since I have [a] kit/s your age. You can just call them 'cousin.' That's easier, right?

Toadjump managed to pull through long enough for any worry that he would fade to diminish significantly. His bandages still needed to be changed frequently, though not as often as Birchspark would have liked, given their lack of resources. It was with luck that Toadjumpâs companion, who Birchspark now knew was named Eaglefluff, was able to collect what he could while Birchspark and Doebur, the she-cat, stayed with his patient.
Now, after four days of unconsciousness followed by brief moments of wake, Toadjump stirred, and Birchspark was immensely relieved and uncomfortable.
Doebur, lying with him, shot up. âIs he waking?â Before Birchspark could answer, she spoke to Toadjump. âToad, Toad, can you hear me? Wake up, dear.â
Toadjump groaned, blinking. His focusing eyes told them that he wouldnât fall asleep again.Â
Eaglefluff, with perfect timing, padded into the den with a clump of waterlogged moss. âI got someââ he dropped it to the floor and rushed to Toadjumpâs side. âIs he waking?âÂ
âIâm waking,â Toadjump confirmed in a sore voice. Slowly, he lifted his head. âWhere am I?â He turned his head to look around him, freezing when he saw Birchspark. A range of emotions flashed in his eyesâshock, fear, joyâJoy, why joy? Why was he still so happy to see him? Why did that pain Birchspark more than the fear?
âHi, Birchspark!...â Toadjump gave a weak smile. He opened his mouth to say something else, but evidently could not think of anything.Â
Birchspark couldnât, either.
Doebur stared at the two of them. âYou know each other?â
Eaglefluff tilted his head. âWhy didnât you say anything?â
âAre you friends?â Doebur asked.
No, Birchspark wanted to answer immediately, but something held it back. âGive us some space,â he said instead. âWe need to talk alone.â
The two of them looked at him, then to Toadjump. âGo, Iâll be okay,â he reassured them.Â
Slowly and hesitantly, the two left the den, rubbernecking as they went. âWeâll be right outside,â Eaglefluff told them. Birchspark heard the secret message thereâIf he tries something, weâre right here. As if he didn't just spend almost a week saving him. He knew some part of him was bothered that he was thought of as a potential threat to Toadjump--physically or, more likely, emotionally, but he didn't dwell on it.
Then the two cats were gone, and suddenly the den was overflowing with tangible tension. Neither cat wanted to speak first, neither could find the right words. What was there to say? He gave his pelt a shake. Just talk to him like a patient.
âYou were unconscious for four days, plus a half including today. You were badly injured: your leg is broken and your body is badly torn. Youâll need your bandages replaced often and each time you do, keep an eye out for infection. Nothing has set in yet, but we can never be too careful.â
Toadjump scanned his body. âThere was a catâŚâ He trailed off. Likely, he was thinking of whoever had done this to him. âNo, it wasâŚtwo?...I canât rememberâŚâ
âBy the looks of you, Iâd say two or three. Then againââ He cut himself off. Then again, a newly-named apprentice with their eyes closed and ears stuffed with moss could best you in any activity you can name, unless you want to count pastimes such as âannoying your former mentor,â âwasting my herbs,â or âwho can talk the longest?â
He hadnât spoken to Toadjump like that since before he found Toadjump poisoning moss. It was how he bantered, how he showed love. Now was not the time for it. He shouldnât be wanting to talk like that anyway, given the fact that he hates Toadjump.
He does hate him.
Doesnât he?
âThanks for saving myâuhmâafterlife.â Toadjump was looking at his paws.
âYour mate did all the work.â Birchspark shrugged. âShe and your friend are the ones who carried your sorry tail to my den, got you water and medicine, cleaned your fur.â
âYou were just here for the entertainment, then?â Toadjump cracked a smile. Birchspark smiled too, before realizing what he was doing and pulling it back. âUhm, what mate?â
Birchspark blinked. âDoebur, the brown she-cat.â
Toadjump shuffled, changing into a more comfortable position. âOh! Sheâs just a friend.â
âCould have had me fooled. She never left your side.â
âFour days straight?â
âFour days straight.â
âEaglefluff got the medicine, then?â
âHe was in to drop off whatever he collected, then out again collecting more.â
âThat was nice of them.â Toadjump frowned. âThat doesnât sound like a good response. Itâs too shallow. TheyâFour days? Of just staying with me or constantly moving, just for me?â
Birchspark nodded.
âStars, how will I ever make it up to them?â
âBy the sounds of it, they were settling a debt owed to you. Said you helped them.â
âThereâs no payment needed, I just did what Iâm meant to do.â
There it is. That rage, that sorrow, bubbling up. But it was smaller than before, as if the emotions, too, were tired of this.Â
âAnd I have to, right? To make up for what I did. I donât regret killing those cats, I mean I donât think I do. ItâsâŚItâs hard to tell. Life feels so much different when youâre dead. Dying doesnât seem so much of a big deal anymore. Not to say itâs not a big deal! ButâjustâIt doesnât eat at me. It should, shouldnât it? Killing eight cats, even terrible onesâŚBut it justâŚI donât not feel guilty, but IâŚI donât know.â He paused for several long moments that seemed to stretch an eternity each. Birchspark waited, hardly moving. âMy mindset now is so different from then. I remember what I thought, the conclusions I came to, the suspicions, the justification. But other than that itâsâŚlike a different cat.â
A blip, Birchspark thought. Hoped. âWho am I talking to, then?â Birchspark asked, millions of questions in one sentence.
Toadjump looked uncertain, his eyes flicking back and forth as if looking for something. Then he gave Birchspark a hopeful smile. âA friend?â
âAcquaintance.â
âA surrogate son?â
Birchspark flattened his ears and made a face. âAcquaintance.â
âA former apprentice youâre proud to have trained?â
âYouâre about to become an enemy.â
Toadjump waved a paw. âOkay, okay! Acquaintance.â
The two of them smiled again, and this time it held. For the first time in years, there was some semblance of peace between them. The icy claws of grief and the fiery burn of anger faded to a dull, hardly noticeable hum. For the first time in a long time, Birchspark didnât feel so cold.

--I'll admit I don't like how this feels rushed considering the previous stories were Birch and Toad first meeting again and, well, you saw how bad things were. But this was written more to see Toad and his relationship with Doe and Eagle, so it is far in the future from the last time we saw Birch and Toad. Many seasons have passed since then. We'll see more of the inbetween at some point, and it's not smooth sailing from here.
--I imagine Eaglefluff and Doebur secretly listening in (at least Doebur, Eagle might have wanted to give them their space but Doebur is the need-to-know-the-drama type of gal). So they, or at least Doebur, heard what Birchspark said.
--Not sure yet if Doebur and Eaglefluff know about what Toadjump did, maybe he told them back when Eagle was ill because they wanted to know what his deal was before they let him help (or they didn't have a choice, here's a medicine cat and you need one right now sort of situation). If not, well then Doebur is sure curious about some more things she heard.
--Birchspark assumed Doebur was Toad's mate and not both Doe AND Eagle or Eagle because he's still used to the Clan's way of living, where only toms get with she-cats in monogamous relationships (because having kits is important and secures the Clan's future and all that). Also because of Doebur's usage of "dear," but she just talks like that.
When Eagle and Doe both become Toad's mate, he'd be like "oh okay cool." Actually no he'd say damn two cats want you? Have you been giving them herbs that make them lose their common sense, eyesight, and smell?
--Birchspark waiting to be told their names instead of just asking, because he's like that.
You know who Might be up to taking a new member into their relationship? Eagle and Doeburr, assuming Doe is the one ok with it (Eagle doesnt mind either way, he just wants his wifey happy but would Totally fall hard for that dork)
Definitely no cheating then! Neither seem like the type to have an open relationship either, and even if they did Doeburr would make sure to let any potential partners know the whole deal.
They would meet under different circumstances, then...Maybe something medical? Seeing as Toadjump is a healer. I could also see him getting himself into trouble again and being rescued by them (maybe both. He helps them, they part ways, they meet again this time with them helping him?)
I just realized they all have a prefix with a different category of animal--bird, amphibian, mammal
@elementaldeityoffood it occurs to me that if they name their kit Koikit, they would still all be unique species: Eagle (bird), Doebur (mammal), Toadjump (amphibian), and Koikit (fish)

Birchspark sat back with a heavy sigh, his paws cramped and legs sore from hours of work. Medication in the Dark Forest wasnât easy to come by, and even harder to cultivate, their effects weaker than the herbs he was used to, and as such he needed to collect more, which meant walking through unknown, perilous lands for days on end just for a small patch of medicine.
It had taken moons of endless work, but finally his denâa hollowed-out outcrop of rock with a burrow beneath itâwas full.
Now, half of his progress was gone, given to the one he had hoped never to see again.
Toadjump lay, unconscious, in a straw nest on the other end of the den. Not the most luxurious bedding, but the best they could do. Most of him was covered in green-brown herbs and webbing, with two sticks on either side of his foreleg. The parts of him that were visible fared only a little better, caked in so much dust, the white splotches were hardly distinguishable from the black, sticking out messily in sweaty clumps. His whiskers were bent in several places, and he had a couple old scratches on his flank.Â
Birchspark didnât want to look at him, he didnât want to think about him, but Toadjump had already been treated, there was no distraction to be taken. He couldnât leave, either, he didnât know these cats with Toadjump, he couldnât trust they wouldnât steal the rest of his store if he left them alone.
These catsâŚThey hadnât given him their names, too panicked and worried for Toadjump. Birchspark thought of that moment, and the spike of terror he felt when he saw who they were carrying on their backs. He didnât treat Toadjump out of love, he convinced himself of that fact, or almost could. Birchspark was a healer, that is his duty, no matter the patient. He would be a hypocrite if he turned him away, simple as that.
One of the cats, a brown she-cat with white rings around her eyesâStarClan? He couldnât be sureâlay wrapped around Toadjump, providing warmth as she watched his face for any sign of waking, her attention never moving. The other cat, a lighter brown tom with a dark back and strangely purple eyesâA Dark Kit, he heard, though it was still hard to believe that such a thing could even existâsat on Toadjumpâs other side, grooming his awfully matted fur. The ground beneath him was slightly stained with a hint of blood. He had run far and ran fast just to collect water, and paid no mind to the injury to his paws.Â
Silence fell over the den for the first time that day, no more panicked questions, no more running around. Toadjump was treated and his condition was stable. There was no reason to work, they could only sit and wait.
âWill he get better?â The she-cat asked. Her voice was shaking.Â
Who was she to Toadjump? Why did she care so much about him? Surely she wouldnât if she knew what he did, how much he hurtâŚBut a bad cat wouldnât get such a reaction out of someone, would they?
âItâs too early to say. He may fade by tomorrow.â A sudden wave of emotion swept through Birchspark, and he grimaced as if it had caused him actual pain. He didnât care, he didnât.Â
The tom let out a frightened squeak. âCanât you do something else?â
Birchspark flicked his tail at the bandages. âItâs up to him, now.â
For a moment, the tom looked as though he would argue, then his gaze softened and he sighed, turning his attention back to Toadjump. âYou get better, okay? Like you made me better. You canât just die after saving me, thatâs not fair. You stuck by my side even though you didnât know me, and Iââ he gulped, as though speaking through a lump in his throatâ âI was close to giving up. So Iâm not gonna leave your side either, okay? Not until you wake up. So please, wake up.â
The she-cat shut her eyes tightly, resting her chin on Toadjumpâs cheek. âWake up,â she whispered.
Birchspark looked away, moving so that his back was to them, and he flattened his ears to muffle their words. He imagined Toadjump treating that tomâfrom a sickness, he guessed, seeing as no deep scars marked his pelt. He imagined the way Toadjump would joke around to make his patient feel better, just as he would always do in life. He imagined him tripping on his own paws in his eagerness to get to whoever needed help. He imagined him soothing the tom, telling him that everything was going to be alright, a calming, comforting presence that made you believe that everything really was going to be okay.
Thatâs who Toadjump used to be. He wasnât anymore, he couldnât be. Someone who killed eight cats, who lied to his mentorâs face, who comforted the families of the ones he killed as if he wasnât the one who had killed them, someone like that couldnât be the same cat this tom was describing.Â
YetâŚIt was Toadjump. That is exactly who he was. Itâs who he had always been. But that other part of him, was it a temporary, horrible blip that came and went, or was it always part of him? Was it still part of him?
NoâŚHe was in the Dark Forest now. There was no reason to treat these cats, who he apparently didnât even know, or to care for them so much that they acted like this when he got hurt. But he did anyway.
Why?
Why was he good to Dark Forest residences and not to his own Clanmates?
Was itâŚWas it Birchspark? Was he the influence that turned Toadjump on such a dark path? He had never been a loving mentor. Kind on really good days, and offering support when it was needed. But he was short-tempered, too, and never shied from insulting Toadjumpâs abilities or intelligence. It was all in good fun though, he didnât mean any of it, and the way Toadjump would smile and shrug it off told him that he knew that.Â
He wondered, not for the first time, if things would have been different if he had just been a little less angry, a little more supportive. Maybe then Toadjump wouldnât have done what he had done, and maybe they wouldnât be here.
He swallowed. No, Toadjump was an adult who had made his own choices. Birchspark wasnât going to burden himself with another catâs crimes.Â
Toadjump was an awful tom. A liar, a betrayer, a murderer, deserving of this place and everything that has happened to him.
ButâŚHe was his apprentice. His old friend. Not his son, but the tom who saw him as a surrogate father. None of those things could ever be changed, no matter how much he willed it.Â
âHe will get better,â he said. It was never a good thing for medicine cats to say with certainty, and in this case there was a good chance he would be wrong. He turned again to look them both in the eyes, before his gaze settled on the sleeping form between them. âI promise you, he will wake up. Iâll make sure of it.â

--Ended up not getting to the part where he calls them mates, whoops. I thought of him telling them that their mate will be fine, but it felt choppy and forced in. Maybe a part 2?
--These two are having an awful time but I do find it funny that they have no idea about the turmoil that Birchspark is experiencing during this. They think he's just another medicine cat, they don't know about Birch and Toad's history.
--In order for Doe and Eagle to care so much about him, I decided that the illness that Eagle had was pretty bad, and so required a lot of time being treated, and it got to the point here Eagle was so tired of fighting it, and it was Toad (and his loved ones ofc) that pulled him out of that hole.
Doebur hadnât been able to stop thinking about what she overheard. Questions and thoughts fluttered around in her mind like a nest of butterflies, echoing the anxiety that burrowed itself in her gut. With it, though, was excitement.
She wasnât exactly sure why, but she was happy.Â
A flattened trail in the long dead grass showed where she had been pacing. She needed to talk to Eaglefluff and Toadjump, but she knew that if she didnât think first and properly collect her thoughts, she would blurt out whatever it was she was thinking in whatever random order it came inâand in this case, with the ideas and thoughts coming to her mind, she really wanted to say it right. So she paced, swishing her tail and muttering, for what must have been hours because when Toadjump appeared from the den, she froze and looked at him, and realized only then how sore her paws were.
Eaglefluff, who had been watching his mate, hurried to meet him. âEverything okay? You were in there a while.â
Toadjumpâs shoulders slumped, but he didnât look upset or tired. If anything, he looked as if a heavy weight had been lifted off of him. âCouldnât be better.â
âIt could be!â Doebur cut in excitedly, then slapped a paw over her mouth. Idiot!
Both Eaglefluff and Toadjump looked at her, surprised. Eaglefluffâs expression was tinged with worry, probably from having watched Doeburâs muttering pace. She got like that sometimes, and he knew he just needed to let her go through it.
âWhat could be better, honey?âÂ
âUuuhhhhâŚâ Shit. All thoughts she had worked to collect fled like fearful mice, leaving her mind empty as she wondered what she should say. âLetâs move somewhere more private.â
Toadjump began to head back into the den. âIâll leave you two alone.â
âNo!â Doebur exclaimed quickly. âI mean, uh, it involves you, you should come with us.â Immediately, Doebur wondered if that was a mistake. She should talk to her mate first, shouldnât she? That was the proper thing to do. Too late now, she decided to be careful with what she said.
Toadjump looked into the den. âBirch wonât want me going too far with my bandages, and I probably shouldnât leave the clearing with my leg.â
âHow else can you leave the clearing?â Eaglefluff asked sincerely.Â
âIs he asleep?â Doebur asked. She suspected she would have heard the grumpy tom by now if he wasnât.
âYeah.â
âThen we should be safe at the edge of the clearing.â
âOkayâŚâ
The cats moved over, Toadjump curious, Eaglefluff confused, both of them concerned, and Doebur desperately trying to remember her earlier thoughts as the fieldâs edge grew too close too fast.Â
Then they were there, and both toms were looking at her.
Okay. Start with something easier.Â
âWhat did you do to get here?â
Toadjumpâs eyes widened, while Eaglefluff quietly said, âwe brought him here.â
âTo the Dark Forest, love,â Doebur patiently explained. Now understanding, Eaglefluff turned his curious eyes to Toadjump.
Toadjump couldnât look at them, instead finding a particular blade of grass off to the side very fascinating. âI may or may not have definitely killed my patients.â
âEight of them?â
Toadjumpâs gaze flicked to her, surprised.Â
Doebur smiled sheepishly. âI may or may not have overheard.â
âI may or may not have told her not to.â
âI may or may not have not listened.â
Toadjump smiled awkwardly. âI may or may not be very confused right now.â
âRight.â Doebur shook her head. âWe wonât judge you or anything. My cousin, well sheâs a whole thing, and Eaglefluffâs mothers all earned their places here. I just..want to know.â
Toadjump dipped his head, and took a deep breath. âOkay, wellâŚâ he explained to them what he had done to each cat, his reasonings at the time and the conclusions he came to, and how he truly believed it was the right thing. Then, with some questions about Birchspark, he explained how his mentor had been furious, unable to forgive Toadjump for his crimes until just today.
âThat all seems pretty reasonable,â Eaglefluff said when he was finished. âConsidering the stuff other cats do to get here. But I only know this, so my judgement might be off.â
âYou donât regret it?â Doebur already knew the answer, she heard it, and she didnât frankly care either way, but for some reason the question spilled out.
âI think I just want to move on from it.â
âWe can do that,â Eaglefluff offered.Â
âYeah,â Doebur agreed. âLetâs change the subject toâŚSo you were a medicine cat. What made you choose that path? We never talked about it before.â
Toadjump appeared to think. âI guess it just pulled me.â
âNo worries about not having a mate then?â Doebur smiled, hoping to show that she was joking, definitely not checking anything.
âOh many crushes. Some things just felt more important, I guess.â
âI get thatâŚ.How about now?â
Toadjump blinked.
Doebur tried to look casual, like she wasnât burning under her fur. âYouâre not held back by the code anymore. Any cat interests you? She-cats? Toms?â
Eaglefluff gave his mate a confused, but open, look, then watched Toadjump, simply curious. Wait..were his eartips darker?
âIâm gonna be careful with she-cats from now on. A surprisingly high number of them have protective mates who donât care that you didnât know any better. And tomsâŚâ Toadjump trailed off. Apparently, he wasnât sure of the answer.
Eaglefluffâs tail wrapped around Doeburâs side. âWhat if her mate likes you too?â
Toadjump was surprised at that, then his brows furrowed in confusion, then he looked at Eaglefluff and then to Doebur and back again, and finally realization hit. "Oh.â
The trio stayed silent, unsure and unable to speak, for what felt like moons, At last, Toadjump opened his mouth to speakâ
âToadjump! Get your sorry tail back here! I swear, if you damage that splint at all, Iâll tear the leg off you!â
Toadjump stared at Eaglefluff and Doebur. âIâIââ
âToadjump!â
âAnother time,â Toadjump told them, before limping after his old mentor.
The pair watched him go, then when he disappeared into the den after Birchspark, they blinked at each other.
âI guess there are some things we should discuss.â
=============================
--POV change! This time neither Birch nor Toad.
--"Start with something easy" -> "So who did you murder?"
--Was a bit harder to show Eagle's emotional intelligence, but I hope it's clear in how he figures out what Doebur is getting at.
--I thought of this art piece of Eagle and Doebur and wanted to bring back the blushing ears.
It's also why Eagle calls Doe 'honey,' it's the same nicknamed used by the cats the artwork is inspired by (the other nicknames wouldn't work as they're words that cats wouldn't know).
--Doebur can be really smart, but she can get flustered and lose all intelligence sometimes.
--Just realized Birchspark has the same suffix to one of Eagle's mother's prefixes.
